Wise man's tablet. Zen means to live life to the fullest - a high claim. Asus also expects much from its latest tablet. The ZenPad S 8.0 is supposed to be the slimmest of its kind and features a big RAM capacity of 4 GB. Asus mentions beauty, strength, and luxury. Here is a first short review.

The Asus ZenPad S 8.0 is one of the best compact Android tablets you can buy for less than £200, thanks to its impressive portability, comfortable user experience and dependable performance. It’s a shame it’s bogged down in crapware, but at least you can slot in a microSD card to boost the built-in storage.

An affordable tablet not to be overlooked
Source: Pocket Lint English Archive.org version
The Asus ZenPad S 8.0 is special because it crams a good, super-sharp screen into a very slim and handy body for a great price. Samsung's best at this level is the Samsung Tab 4 8.0, which isn't nearly as good by comparison. If you have a bit more to spend you can often get a great deal on a Nexus 9 or last-gen Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4. But only because they're quietly being discontinued (at the time of writing). It's actually the £219 iPad Mini 2 that is the most alluring alternative. But how much does the extra £50 mean to you?

The ZenPad S looks very impressive on paper, particularly when you consider it costs £170 for the 16GB model - significantly less than the iPad Mini or Samsung's Galaxy Tab S2, arguably the two premium tablets to beat right now. On closer inspection it's clear to see why; the design might be gorgeous and the display resolution very high, but performance is only mediocre and battery life isn’t great either. If you’re looking for a gaming tablet to take on the move, this probably won’t fit the bill, but for web browsing and watching videos on the sofa, it’s a great buy.

Performance from the Intel Atom Z3560 is also very solid. There is enough processing power to deliver a good real world experience. A strong set of benchmark scores argue the point that the included Z3560 CPU is a mid-range processor. This CPU will please even the most impatient tablet users with its sheer speed. An 8MP camera is capable of delivering decent photos, too. They are not spectacular and I would still recommend using a modern smartphone for photography on the go. That said, images are fairly detailed for a tablet, and colours look good – so this camera can do a job.

How much would you pay for a tablet that comes with an 8-inch 2K display, new USB Type-C connector, 8MP/5MP camera combo, svelte/elegant design, 64-bit Intel Atom processor, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage with microSD expansion? How about $299 for the entire package? That’s not too shabby when you think about it, so it’ll definitely appeal to those who are cost-conscious.

ASUS has a history of building Android tablets with solid specs for the money (MeMO Pad, Nexus 7) and the ZenPad S 8.0 is yet another example. It has a really nice looking display with a 2048x1536 resolution, a fair bit of power provided by an Intel Atom Z3580 processor and 4GB of RAM, and even a newfangled (and reversible) USB Type-C port, though it limits transfers to USB 2.0 speeds.

The ZenPad S 8.0 Z580CA is undoubtedly a quality tablet for the price, especially if you keep the charging cable close. The benchmarks compete with much pricier devices, and its design is as comfortable to use as it is aesthetically pleasing. We'd still rather have the Xperia Z4 Tablet, for its superior enterprise software, longer battery life and attachable keyboard, but for anyone looking specifically for an ultra-portable 8in slate, this is one to consider alongside, and perhaps even instead of...

60% A taste of the high-end for less
Source: PC Pro English Archive.org version
The ZenPad S 8.0’s biggest problem, however, is the thing Asus can do least about: the strength of the competition. For instance, you can pick up a 16GB Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 for around £270, or a 32GB iPad mini 2 for £279. That's a fair bit more cash, but both those devices are markedly more refined as a result. If you can live with its flaws, then the ZenPad S 8.0 delivers a hint of the high-end Android compacts for a little less, but frankly I'd recommend spending the extra - you'll be glad you did.

The Asus ZenPad S 8 0 offers a vibrant screen, sleek design and more than capable performance for $100 to $200 less than other premium 8-inch tablets. The $199 configuration, while not as powerful as the configuration we reviewed, is a particularly good value. ZenUI also offers some nice shortcuts and a good Kids Mode app for safely sharing the slate with children.

The Asus ZenPad 8 Android Tablet is shaped more like a mobile phone than a tablet as it is taller than you think and also less wide than the normal. This shape means it is easier to hold in a hand than a lot of other similar devices, so possibly less easy to drop. The ZenPad measures 20.5x12.2x.7cm and weighs just 348grams.

While Asus may have been the first company to create a truly great affordable tablet in 2012, it’s 2015 budget follow up is slightly disappointing. It's ok for basic tasks, like video streaming and web browsing, but a mix of low powered hardware and software bugs hamper its overall appeal.

70% Decent tablets don't come cheaper than this
Source: Tech Advisor English Archive.org version
The Asus ZenPad C 7.0 is a fine tool for carrying in your bag wherever you go and using to check emails and social media and browse the web. Beyond that its functionality is limited, but what more can you expect from an £80 tablet? If you can stretch to the £99 Hudl 2 you will find a noticeable jump in performance, but the Asus is the more portable of the two.

Cheap tab, dock combo you can turn up to 11
Source: Reg Hardware English Archive.org version
The ZenPad 10 is no match for the Z4 Tablet but then the Sony package costs two and a half times as much. If you want to watch videos and listen to music without headphones then the ZenPad’s stereo speaker dock is well worth having. It really does sound very good. They keyboard isn’t great, but it is better than most no-name, third-party Bluetooth affairs.

70% Flying the Android Tablet Flag
Source: NDTV Gadgets English Archive.org version
The device itself is supplemented admirably by the Audio Cover, an accessory that not only protects the tablet, but also boosts sound volume and quality considerably, making the ZenPad 8.0 a fantastic media device. The only real weakness - and a significant one at that - is the low-resolution screen. Asus produces smartphones with full-HD screens for less than the asking price of the ZenPad 8.0 (Z380KL), so sticking to 1280x800 is a fairly major drawback for us. However, if you're looking for a good mid-sized, mid-priced Android tablet, this should offer the Xiaomi Mi Pad some competition.

Asus ZenPad 7.0 Z370CG

The Asus ZenPad 7.0 (Z370CG) is offered at friendly pricing with three color choices (Black, White and Metallic), better screen and improved back camera. The tablet's look is not surprising with plastic material and a thick border surrounding the panel. Its front camera, light sensor, and earpiece are placed on the top while the micro USB port and headphones jack are on the bottom. Besides, it has a SIM card slot and a Micro SD card slot for expandable storage. The Android 5.1 Lollipop tablet features an Intel Atom x3-C3230 quad-core chipset and 2 GB of RAM. Additionally, is uses Asus's own UI, which can automatically organize your apps into folders if you wish it to do so. This 7-inch tablet offers a crisp 1280 x 800 pixel resolution and great viewing angles for watching videos or basic routine tasks, such as replying to emails. Thanks to its new earpiece, phone calls have a decent sound quality and lesser noise. However, performance and sound quality do not cater to gaming. Overall, it is ranked as average product in the family of tablets. It is more likely a voice-calling tablet for your work station.

60% Mainly for media consumption with the Audio cover
Source: Tech2.in.com English Archive.org version
The standout feature of the Asus ZenPad 7.0 is the audio functionality which it bundles with the Audio cover. Not only does the audio cover give a richer and louder sound, but the 2300mAh battery on the audio cover also gives a boost to the longevity of the tablet itself. Apart from that, the ZenPad 7.0 is like any other tablet – and an expensive one at that looking at the performance and feature sheet.

If you want a tablet for about 12K and don’t mind losing out on the ability to make calls, then there are better options like the Xiaomi Mi Pad available in the market. The Mi Pad has a larger display with a better resolution and better hardware powering it. The Asus ZenPad 7.0 has underwhelming performance when it comes to gaming but if you are on a budget looking for a voice-calling tablet, for absolute basic work, you can give it a look.

The Asus ZenPad Z8 is a fun tablet, and I found myself playing games and watching videos more often than I usually do while testing it. Those are the use cases in which the Z8 shines the most, and if you’re in the market for a reliable Android tablet that’s going to give you one of the best multimedia experiences in this price range, the Z8 is absolutely worth checking out.

The perfect travel tablet?
Source: Techno Buffalo English Archive.org version
I didn’t expect to be impressed by the ZenPad Z8, but Asus clearly knows what it’s doing when it comes to making budget-friendly Android tablets. There’s a bit of the classic Nexus 7 buried somewhere in there, serving as a sturdy foundation for modern hardware and software enhancements. The real issue with this tablet is that it’s only available from Verizon, but if that’s not a problem for you, there’s nothing else to hold you back from picking one up.

60% A capable tablet not worth signing a contract for
Source: PC World English Archive.org version
I’ve always thought it’s a bit foolish to sign a two-year contract with a wireless carrier for a tablet. Sure, maybe the carrier knocks a couple hundred dollars off the purchase price, but at the end of the contract the cost of monthly service fee winds up being far more expensive than what you save. Use the Asus ZenPad Z8 as an example: Full retail price is $250, or you can sign to a two-year term to drop the price by $100, with a the lowest monthly data plan running $30 per month.

A Spec-Heavy $249 Verizon Tablet
Source: Android Authority English Archive.org version
There is little complaining that can be done once you factor in the Z8’s affordable pricing. Although the display could be less reflective, there could be more RAM, and the camera could produce better images, there’s a lot to love about this tablet. With its dual front-facing speakers, excellent high-resolution display, and very good performance, the ZenPad Z8 is yet another home run for ASUS.

Zen of wishes? Asus' new tablet with the size of an iPad Mini not only offers good features including WWAN modem and stereo speakers, but it is also comparatively affordable. Does the more expensive competition have a problem?

Asus ZenPad 3s 10

The Asus ZenPad 3s 10 is a first-rate 9.7-inch tablet. Not only is it good-looking, but it also is a solidly built tablet with its forged aluminium body. It is lightweight at 430 g and is only 5.8 mm thin. Asus aims to provide users with an immersive multimedia experience with the ZenPad 3s 10. Its 9.7-inch 2K (2048 x 1536 pixel) IPS display features wide 178-degree viewing angle and the exclusive ASUS VisualMaster and ASUS Tru2Life technologies, which provide users with a rich visual experience. Asus claims that the Tru2Life technology “enhances every pixel to deliver optimum contrast and sharpness for beautiful images that look just like real life”. This is further complemented with with the ASUS TruVivid display and ASUS Bluelight Filter, which provide real-world vibrancy. Not lacking is an equally impressive sound system as the ZenPad 3s 10 is powered with dual five-magnet speakers, which are driven by an NXP Smart Amp for clearer and louder output. The DTS Headphone:X delivers a crisp cinematic 7.1-channel surround sound experience straight to the headphones. The ZenPad 3s 10’s performance specs are no less remarkable. Powered by a super-fast Mediatek MT8176 hexa-core processor with 4 GB RAM, the ZenPad 3s 10 will run the latest games with ease and, at the same time, afford users with the capacity to multitask comfortably. It is fitted with a high-capacity 5900 mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 technology for longer productivity, which is necessary for a tablet. It comes with a 8 MP front-facing camera and a 5 MP rear snapper. The 8 MP PixelMaster camera is said to capture high-resolution photos with zero shutter lag. With its Low Light technology, images are captured up to 400% brighter at night or in low-light environments, even without the need for a flash. However, in real life situations, the camera is only usable for simple photography. Users can’t expect to get photos like from a digital camera or even a camera smartphone. The device runs on Android 6.0 with the latest ZenUI 3.0 – Game Genie, which provides users with the much needed accessibility and improved productivity. The ZenPad 3s 10 is shipped with either 32 GB or 64 GB internal storage and its MicroSD slot allows to expand the storage capacity by up to 256 GB. Networking is supported by both WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity. Users may opt to accessorize the ZenPad 3s 10 with the Z Stylus. This stylus is designed to provide a natural writing and drawing experience with the ease of use of a pen, similar to Samsung’s Note series. The Folio Cover provides a stylish protection to the ZenPad 3s 10. Packed with so many features, it is no wonder that the ZenPad 3s 10 ranks highly in many reviews carried out thus far. It is certainly a great choice for someone who is looking for a very good tablet. Hands-on article by Jagadisa Rajarathnam

And indeed, we saw a lot else to like about the ZenPad 3S 10. The impressive display, extreme trimness, media-handling performance, and audio output all make it a worthy contender among iPad Air-size Android competitors. Add in the solid performance (battery notwithstanding), the 64GB of built-in storage that's expandable via MicroSD, and the relatively light weight, and you’ll find the ZenPad 3S 10 an attractive package for $299, based on what else is on the market around that price.

ASUS ZenPad 3S 10 review: The iPad Air running Android
Source: Android Police English Archive.org version
The ZenPad 3S 10 is a mixed bag. While I found it good enough for what I use a tablet for (primarily media consumption and light productivity), there are so many areas where ASUS could have improved it. The bottom-firing speakers and physical navigation buttons are mild annoyances, but the lack of any multi-window functionality is a huge issue for anyone looking to be productive. In addition, the smaller battery means you will might have to bring a charger for long car trips or extended binge-watching sessions.

Asus is delivering solid value for the money at $299 for a 2048-by-1536, 10-inch, 64GB tablet. Yes, there are better tablets out there—but not for this price. The ZenPad 3S 10 gives you the multimedia chops you'd expect from a tablet costing $100-200 more. But it's important to know where the ZenPad's limits are. Android doesn't have the range of tablet-oriented games you'll find on the iOS platform, or the quality of productivity apps you'll find on Windows. And the Mediatek processor here isn't going to rock the world with its gaming performance. But, once again, you have to spend around $500 to get a better processor, or an iOS or Windows tablet with this kind of screen. Just make sure to keep it near a charger.

Despite its ‘iPad-alike’ tendencies, Asus has done a good job crafting a media-centric slate. It’s light, thin and has a bright display. There should also be decent audio and plenty of power for gaming. It probably won’t sway long time Apple lovers, but it’s another decent Android option out there.

Under the hood, the ZenPad 3S 10 has a hexa-core MediaTek 8176 processor that is supported by 4GB of RAM. From our brief experience, everything seemed nice and smooth to operate, with no lag switching between various apps. There is 64GB of onboard storage with a microSD slot allowing for expansion up to 128GB.

Asus ZenPad 10 Z300M-6B040A

The Asus ZenPad 10 Z300M is a cheap tablet, but exactly how cheap depends on whether users buy it with a keyboard or not. The Asus ZenPad 10 Z300M has a 10.1-inch screen, so it's not a super-portable tablet. The big screen is one of the slate's main selling points since most cheap tablets have just 7 or 8-inch displays. As for design, it's harder to make a tablet stand out than a phone. The Asus ZenPad 10 Z300M tries to look premium, with a back that mostly tries to look like leather, while the bottom section gives the appearance of aluminum. It is just an effect, of course, the lot is plastic and not the sort of plastic with a soft touch finish or one that feels like another material. At 490 g, the ZenPad 10 Z300M is a bit heavy to try to carry around in one hand. However, the Asus ZenPad 10 Z300M feels well-made. It doesn't flex under hand pressure more than a tablet twice the price and its screen is covered by toughened glass. The one piece of hardware that lets the Asus ZenPad 10 Z300M down is the screen, namely the resolution, which is dismal at 1280 x 800 pixel. A user can easily notice the difference between this sort of resolution and 1080p in a 5-inch phone. The screen is the limiting factor for media. The Asus ZenPad 10 Z300M can only do justice to 720p videos, as it doesn't have the pixels to render all the information a Full HD file contains. The Asus ZenPad 10 Z300M has a MediaTek MT8163 CPU. This is a quad-core 1.3 GHz processor with four Cortex-A53 cores. The chip is comparable with the Snapdragon 410 CPU that has been used in numerous low-end phones and tablets. The slate uses a Mali MT720 MP2 graphics chip and the CPU is paired with 2 GB of DDR3 RAM. It is not super-fast but enough of the stuff to make Android 6.0 function fairly well and the 16 GB of internal storage isn't too slow either, writing at 64 MB/s and reading at 89 MB/s. Low-resolution tablets like the Asus ZenPad 10 Z300M often last absolutely ages between charges. Asus says the Z300M lasts up to 11 hours under normal usage. The Z300M's stamina will improve if you drop the screen brightness. However, it takes long to charge, taking over four hours as there's no fast charging tech packed in. Tablet cameras have improved a lot over the last couple of years. They're a step or two behind phone cameras. Cheap tablets like the Asus ZenPad 10 Z300M sensibly keep their cameras basic, though. There's a 5 MP snapper on the back and a 2 MP selfie camera on the front. A lot of bonus modes are included, such as HDR, a GIF-maker, a shallow depth of field mode and a QR reader. Pleasant sounding elite of tablets . Asus' ZenPad 3s wants to be a serious competitor for Apple and aims to attract iPad owners. Thanks to a high-quality casing and hi-res sound, this might even function - were it not for some strange happenings during the test...

ASUS ZenPad Z10 review: A fantastic tablet for what that's worth
Source: Android Police English Archive.org version
The ZenPad Z10 is a decidedly better tablet than its cousin, the ZenPad 3S 10. It offers fantastic performance, wonderful build quality with a beautiful screen, a pretty decent software experience all things considered, and simply amazing battery life. It's because of these things that I think it is one of the best Android tablets you can get right now, for what that's worth. What makes it even better is that you get all of this for $329.99 outright, $149.99 on a two-year contract, or for $13.74 per month.

Android still isn't our overall pick for a tablet operating system. It has fewer tablet-optimized app experiences than iOS, and it has less capable productivity apps than Windows. But Android tablets are just fine for Web browsing, video playback, ereading, and plenty of games, and their prices often can't be beat. The Z10 gets you a lot for your money, making it a solid buy.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. is a major Taiwanese computer hardware manufacturer based in Taipei, founded in 1989. Under the Asus brand name, the company manufactures a wide range of products, including laptops, desktops, motherboards, graphics cards, monitors, smartphones and networking equipment, complete systems and PC components for end users.

Under the ROG (Republic of Gamers) brand name, ASUS manufactures gaming laptops known by gamers for their powerful specifications, dedicated graphics cards, high refresh rate displays and advanced cooling systems.

Beyond gaming, a wide range of notebooks are offered for different needs and budgets, from ultra-slim and lightweight ultrabooks to versatile 2-in-1 convertibles and budget-friendly options. In 2023, Asus had a 7% global market share of the PC market.

Customer satisfaction with ASUS notebooks concerns performance, the features, and the good price-performance ratio of ASUS notebooks. However, as with any brand, there are occasional reports of problems such as overheating, driver compatibility, or build quality issues.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

Imagination PowerVR G6430: Multi core (4 cluster) graphics card for ARM processors that supports OpenGL 4.x and ES 3.0

Qualcomm Adreno 510: Integrated graphics card based on the Adreno 500 architecture, like the Adreno 520 in the Snapdragon 820. Performance should be on average similar to the old Adreno 330 in the Snapdragon 801. Supports DirectX12, OpenCL 2.0, OpenGL ES 3.1 + AE.

Imagination PowerVR GX6250: 2 cluster graphics chip integrated in ARM SoC (e.g. used in the MediaTek MT8173)

These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.

ARM Mali-450 MP4: OpenGL ES 2.0 GPU for ARM based SoCs with 4 fragment processors and 1 vertex processor.

Qualcomm Adreno 306: Integrated mid-range graphics card in the Snapdragon 410 SoCs that supports OpenGL ES 3.0 and features unified shaders.

ARM Mali-T720 MP2: Integrated graphics card in ARM based SoCs. Can be configured with up to 8 cores (T720 MP8) and 650 MHz core clock (at 28nm). Supports OpenGL ES 3.1, OpenCL 1.1, DirectX 11 FL9_3, and Renderscript.

Intel Atom: The Intel Atom series is a 64-Bit (not every model supports 64bit) microprocessor for cheap and small notebooks (so called netbooks), MIDs, or UMPCs. The speciality of the new architecture is the "in order" execution (instead of the usual and faster "out of order" execution). Therefore, the transistor count of the Atom series is much lower and, thus, cheaper to produce. Furthermore, the power consumption is very low. The performance per Megahertz is therfore worse than the old Pentium 3M (1,2 GHz on par with a 1.6 GHz Atom).

Z3580: Quad-core SoC for smartphones and tablets. Clocked at up to 2.33 GHz and integrates a DirectX-11-capable PowerVR/IMG GPU.

C3230RK: Entry-level quad-core Atom CPU (at 1.1 - 1.2 GHz max) for cheap Android smartphones and tablets. Includes a 3G radio and a ARM Mali-450 MP4 GPU.

Z3560: Quad-core SoC for smartphones and tablets. Clocked at up to 1.83 GHz and integrates a DirectX-11-capable PowerVR/IMG GPU.

Qualcomm Snapdragon:

7.00:

This display format is in the mid-range for smartphones. It offers a compromise between good visibility, details and resolution on the screen, and you can still fit it into trouser pockets.

8.00:

Large smartphones and a few small tablets are available for this display size. Unlike most smartphones, you can see more on the screen, more details and use larger resolutions. Such formats are better for people with defective vision. However, such devices are no longer easy to fit in a pocket, and they are probably not quite light either.

77.07%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
