One could argue that the Asus Zenfone series was one of the pioneers in the affordable smartphone category. The Zenfone 2, in particular, sparked the “Cheap and Good” trend among smartphones. But with so much competition from various Chinese companies, Asus has been losing its market share in this category since the Zenfone 3. The Zenfone 5 is set to make a comeback for Asus into the top seller league. As with previous generations, Asus has used the same name for all their 2018 models. They all sit under the Zenfone 5 name, but defer in terms of target buyers and specs. The Zenfone 5Z sits at the top of the chain of  2018 models. Covering almost the entire frontal part of the phone is a 6.2-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1080 x 2246 pixels. The display has quite high brightness and is really good, despite not being an AMOLED display. It comes in the latest 19:9 aspect ratio, and the top part has a notch that covers a slight portion of the display. Just like the iPhone X, Huawei P20 Pro and various other new devices, the notch takes a bit of time to get used to. However, it is necessary to maximize the display on a smaller device. The body of the Zenfone 5Z is made of aluminium and glass, giving it a sleek and neat look. The back of the device has a metal shine to it. The entire phone weighs 155 grams and measures 7.9 mm in thickness.

The smartphone comes with the latest processor from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 845, also seen in most of the current flagship devices such as the OnePlus 6 and Samsung Galaxy S9. The processor is paired with an Adreno 630 GPU, ready for some serious gaming. The Zenfone 5Z comes with various memory configurations to choose from. For built-in memory, buyers can choose between 64 GB, 128 GB and even 256 GB of storage. This is paired with either 4 GB, 6 GB or 8 GB of RAM. The second sim-card slot of this phone can be used to expand the device’s storage by up to 512 GB. In the camera department, the Zenfone 5Z comes with a dual-camera setup consisting of a 12MP and an 8MP shooter. It features dual LED flash, 4K video recording and HDR mode. The selfie camera is a single 8MP unit with Full-HD video recording capabilities. Initial reports on the cameras are not so great when compared to other flagship devices. However, this could improve with some app updates. Other features of the device include the latest Bluetooth 5.0, which allows multiple simultaneous connections; a rear mounted fingerprint sensor; USB Type-C for charging and data transfer; and a 3300mAh battery to power it all. The Zenfone 5Z is also equipped with two speakers for clearer and richer sound effect and a traditional 3.5mm earphone jack for personal music playback. Like its predecessors, the Zenfone 5Z has managed to squeeze a lot into a very affordable price tag. However, the competition is tough, and there are many other choices out there from Xiaomi, Huawei, OnePlus, Vivo and Oppo that can come close to it.
