80% Asus VivoBook X550CA review

Nevertheless, screen and battery life issues aside, the Asus VivoBook X550CA is still a marked improvement over its predecessors. Its Ivy Bridge processor may be showing its age, but it can still compete with other budget laptops in raw performance, and it remains one of the cheapest 15.6in laptops we've seen to come with a full ten-point touchscreen.

The ASUS X550CA still remains as a solid value for those looking at a basic laptop computer. The problem is that it doesn't really distinguish itself from the competition in any real way. In fact, the laptop design really needs to be updated to address the limited number of USB ports which is as much as half as many as the competition.

With an attractive design, strong audio and a low price, the ASUS X550CA is a solid sub-$500 notebook. However, you have to be willing to live with a few compromises, such as limited viewing angles and mediocre battery life. At this price, we prefer the HP Pavilion g6t because of its brighter screen and longer endurance.

80% ASUS X550CA-XO113H Laptop review
Source: Trusted Reviews English
If you’re on a budget, it’s really hard to argue with the ASUS X550. Yes, you can easily see where the cost savings have occurred (cheap feel, low quality screen, Intel Celeron processor, rattly keyboard), but at the same time the savings really add up. At £329, the performance isn’t too far removed from the £430 HP Touchsmart Sleekbook and the £499 ASUS V550C. It feels cheap, and the cost-saving areas are obvious, but at just £329 RRP with similar performance to laptops £100 more expensive, this is an impressive performer.

Asus X550CC-XO229D

The Asus X550CC-XO229D has been built down to a price. The plastic body tells of its budget friendly nature, and there is a lack of quality apparent in the hinges. The cheap feel is inescapable, but the casing is otherwise decent enough. Weighing in at 2.3 kg, this 15.6 inch machine is no lightweight, but it's portable. The island style keys are spacious and support long hours of error free typing. The matte 1366 x 768 screen provides nice colors and contrast; it wouldn't be realistic to expect a Full HD screen at this price.

The previous generation Ivy Bridge, Intel Core i3-3217U chugs along at 1.8 GHz inside. The combination of Intel HD Graphics HD4000 and NVIDIA GeForce GT720M is a nice boost of graphics power that will just about allow users to play moderately demanding games at the lowest possible settings. The Asus X550CC-XO229D is only equipped with 1 USB 3.0 port and 1 USB 2.0 port. This may represent a serious hindrance for some users. Overall, this budget machine does what it sets out to do. As such, it will not bedazzle the senses with an innovative and gorgeous design, or take ones breath away with sheer speed. It will fit nicely within a budget, and be good enough for getting work done, as long as the programs used aren't too demanding.

Source: PC Advisor English
The dull screen is a bit of a let-down, but the X550LDV does provide better performance than most laptops in the sub-£600 category. It's not the most portable of laptops either, but respectable battery life ensures that the X550LDV makes a good desktop replacement system that will earn its keep without breaking the bank.

60% Asus X550LDV-XO552H review
Source: Expert Reviews English
The Asus X550LDV-XO552H is a good performer that's let down by cheap build quality and a poor screen. If you're willing to put up with these problems, it's one of the better-value general-purpose laptops on the market at the moment, with the added boon of a dedicated graphics processor. A good alternative, though, is the Best Buy-winning Chillblast Prestige i5 4200SH. The Prestige i5 4200SH doesn't have a dedicated graphics chip, but it does have an excellent processor, a Full-HD screen and it costs less.

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

Intel HD Graphics 3000: Integrated graphics card in the Intel Sandy Bridge processors (Core ix-2xxx). The HD 3000 is the faster (internally GT2 called) version with 12 Execution Units (EUs).

Intel HD Graphics (Ivy Bridge): In the mobile Ivy Bridge Celeron and Pentium CPUs integrated processor graphics card. The HD Graphics is the slower, GT1 called, part with less execution units (EUs) and only one texture sampler - compared to the GT2 HD Graphics 4000.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 720M: Lower middle-class graphics card based on the 28 nm GF117 (Fermi).

Intel HD Graphics 4000: Processor graphics card in the high end Ivy Bridge models. Offers a different clock speed in the different CPU models (ULV to desktop quad core) and therefore a different performance.

AMD Radeon HD 8550G + HD 8670M Dual Graphics: Dual Graphics (asymmetrical CrossFire) combination of a dedicated Radeon HD 8670M  and a 8550G processor graphics card (in the processor core of the A-Series). Only in some cases faster than the dedicated GPU alone and furthermore it sometimes suffers from micro stuttering.

NVIDIA GeForce 820M:

Entry level 28nm Fermi GPU from the GeForce 800M series based on the GT 620M and 710M.

With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M: Mid-range graphics card of the GeForce GT 700M series. Based on the Kepler architecture and manufactured by TSMC in a 28nm process.

NVIDIA GeForce 840M:

Mid-range graphics card from the GeForce 800M series based on the Maxwell architecture.

Intel Core i3:

3217U: Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q2 2012. Offers a core clock of 1.8 GHz (no Turbo Boost) and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1050 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.

2348M: Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.3 GHz and features the Turbo Boost 2.0 only for the graphics card (650/1150MHz). Similar to the  Core i3-2350M but without SMB tools support.

Intel Core i5:

3337U: Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q1 2013. Offers a core clock of 1.8 - 2.7 GHz and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1100 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.

3230M: Fast Ivy-Bridge-based dual-core, includes HD 4000 GPU, core clock 2.6 - 3.2 GHz

4200U:

Haswell-based ULV dual-core processor clocked at 1.6 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 2.6 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4400 and a dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.

4210U: Haswell-based ULV dual-core processor clocked at 1.7 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 2.7 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4400 and a dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.

Intel Pentium:

2117U: Ultra Low Voltage Dual-core processor based on the Ivy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. Due to the Pentium brand, many features of the Ivy Bridge core are deactivated.

Intel Celeron:

1007U: Entry level ULV dual core processor with integrated graphics card called Intel HD Graphics and reduced features of the Ivy Bridge core (no Turbo Boost, AES, ...).

AMD A-Series:

A8-5550M: Quad-core processor with only two FPUs and an integrated Radeon HD 8550G graphics card. Top model of the "Richland" A8 series.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

4510U: Haswell-based ULV dual-core processor clocked at 2.0 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.1 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4400 and a dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.

15.6: 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays. However nowadays, more and more 16:9 displays with 15.6 inch appear. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

2.2 kg:

These sub-notebooks weight less than the average of all notebooks, but represent a heavier class of weight among the sub-notebooks. 13 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.

2.3 kg:

74.69%: This rating is bad. Most notebooks are better rated. This is not a recommendation for purchase.
