While the display does suffer from a narrow viewing angle, you really can't moan too much about this well equipped laptop which is a bargain at the asking price.

In terms of performance, this is clearly a budget laptop. The use of an AMD Turion 64 Mobile X2 processor and 2048MB of memory resulted in a MobileMark 2007 score of 111, which is less than half of what can be expected from the latest processors. However, for word processing, using the internet and basic office tasks, this machine is more than usable. At this price, manufacturers tend to keep extras to a minimum, but you'll find a DVD rewriter fitted, as well as a webcam. Ports are kept to a minimum, but with four USB ports, ExpressCard, SD-card slot and VGA-port, you'll be able to add sufficient peripherals. There is also a Wi-Fi switch, so you'll be able to preserve battery life when wireless LAN is not required.

Asus X102BA-BH41T
For those in the market looking for an entry-level PC to do really simple tasks, for example students on a budget or kids starting to use a PC, the Asus X102BA is a highly recommended device.
It is powered by a Temash APU AMD dual core 1.0 GHz processor. This means that the GPU is integrated in the chip. While it only runs at 1.0 GHz, it's enough to run the most basic apps and software a student or child would need. This is definitely a not a machine for businessmen or work. But it is power efficient and able to meet the needs of its target audience. Furthermore it features 4 GB of RAM, which is helpful for multitasking.
The 10.1-inch screen has a native resolution of 1366 x 768. So, movies can be played at 720p. It is also a multipoint touchscreen, and since it ships with a fully-fledged Windows 8, this is a perfect combination. As it comes with a conventional 500 GB HDD, you should not fast load times. But, it features 1 USB 3.0 port for faster data transfer.
This device is clearly for students on a budget or younger kids who only need a simple machine. It is not meant for professionals or for those that are looking for a work machine. It cannot even run simple games, but it is light, good enough for simple tasks and power efficient.

If you are after the latest and greatest Windows 8 laptop then the Asus X102B can't claim to be that. But it does deliver for the budget and, in our view, wins compared to a Chromebook solution. The Asus X102B is a solid small-scale laptop that's affordable and capable for the basics. The only reason it doesn't score higher is because we're not convinced a laptop such as this is the best solution these days.

The Asus X102BA is certainly very cheap, but you shouldn’t buy this laptop when the superior Asus Transformer Book T100 is just £60 more. With its slow processor, long loading times and poor screen, the X102BA is both frustrating and time-consuming to use. If you really want a cheap touchscreen laptop, the Asus Transformer Book T100 is a much better buy. Otherwise you're better off with a £200 Chromebook such as the Acer C720.

At this price point, the Asus XB102BA is surprisingly good. We fully expected a similar performance to that of its closest rival, the HP Pavilion TouchSmart 11, but it betters it in almost every respect – its in-Windows performance is better, the screen is superior and it's much lighter too. It's not the ideal option for business users, but for students or young kids this is almost the perfect device, thanks to its ability to function as both tablet and useable laptop when needed.

The Asus X102BA only offers modest performance, but could still be good value for money. Its screen and build quality are above average for a cheap Windows laptop, and added extras such MS Office mean that it provides a basic, but functional laptop at a very competitive price. Battery life needs to double though to keep up with modern laptops and tablets.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. is a major Taiwanese computer hardware manufacturer based in Taipei, founded in 1989. Under the Asus brand name, the company manufactures a wide range of products, including laptops, desktops, motherboards, graphics cards, monitors, smartphones and networking equipment, complete systems and PC components for end users.
Under the ROG (Republic of Gamers) brand name, ASUS manufactures gaming laptops known by gamers for their powerful specifications, dedicated graphics cards, high refresh rate displays and advanced cooling systems.
Beyond gaming, a wide range of notebooks are offered for different needs and budgets, from ultra-slim and lightweight ultrabooks to versatile 2-in-1 convertibles and budget-friendly options. In 2023, Asus had a 7% global market share of the PC market.
Customer satisfaction with ASUS notebooks concerns performance, the features, and the good price-performance ratio of ASUS notebooks. However, as with any brand, there are occasional reports of problems such as overheating, driver compatibility, or build quality issues.
These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.
ATI Radeon Xpress 1100: The successor of the Xpress M200 integrated shared memory graphic card is based on a x300 core. Aero Glass should run fluently on the card.
ATI Radeon Xpress 200M: ATI Radeon Xpress 200M is the shared memory integrated graphic card from ATI based on a X300 core. In general it is a bit faster than the Intel GMA 950 graphic core.
NVIDIA GeForce 7000M: It is an integrated (shared memory) graphic card, inserted in nForce 610M, for laptops with AMD processors (socket S1).
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on a Mobile Intel 965GM chipset. It is the successor of GMA 950 and features a fully programmable pipeline (supports Aero Glass fully and DirectX 10 with newest drivers). The peformance of the X3100 is clearly better than the GMA 950, still demanding modern games won't run fluently.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
ATI Mobility Radeon X2300: Renamed X1350 graphics chip and, therefore, only DirectX 9 capable.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650: The Hd 3650 is a middle class graphics card (in 2008) and compareable to an 8600M GT GPU from Nvidia. It is fabricated in 55nm process and due to Avivo video engine the graphic card can support the processor with several video operations (HD video too).
AMD Radeon HD 8180: Integrated graphics card of the AMD A4-1200 APU ("Temash"). Based on the GCN architecture, offers 128 shader units and is clocked at 225 MHz.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Celeron M: It is a Pentium M with halved level 2 Cache and limited on FSB 400. The characteristic of this processor is the speed, which is hardly slower than an equivalent Pentium M. However it can change the speed not dynamically like the Pentium M and therefore needs without load more current.
It is also available as Low Voltage Version with very small current consumption.
Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.
T9300:
The T9300 is a fast middle class dual core CPU for laptops and similar to the T9400 but with a lower FSB.
AMD Athlon 64 X2:
Intel Pentium Dual Core: The return of the name Pentium, though it is a Yonah core. In fact, it is a double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption.
T3200: Entry-level dual core processor with a slow performance due to the old Merom core and a small level 2 cache.
AMD A-Series:
A4-1200: Dual-core APU for ultraportables and tablets, codenamed Temash. Based on the Jaguar architecture. Integrates a Radeon HD 8180 graphics card.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
1.1 kg:
3.9 kg:
A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.
74.63%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
