80% Do the features justify the price?
Source: Pocket Lint
Perhaps the first question you need to ask yourself about this notebook is; why would you want to spend £1400 on a machine when you can get a machine with a decent specification at a similar weight for half the price? Yes, it may be hard to justify spending this kind of money on what on the surface doesn’t look that different from a large number of machines on the market and we’d have to agree. However, once you start to use the V1J you do start to see where your money has gone. It handles smooth, the specification is strong and the performance one of the best we’ve seen in recent months.

74% This powerful, distinguished-looking business laptop is hampered by stiff mouse buttons.
Source: PC World
This Vista Business laptop has a distinguished look and performance to spare. The V1Jp-AK023E's battery may expire a little too quickly for some, and you'd probably want to pack a mouse on travels. With an external pointer, however, it would make a fine desktop replacement.

Asus V1JP with Windows Vista Ultimate Review
Source: Notebookreview.com
I did not install Power4Gear, rather used the built in tools for Vista. There is an icon in the system tray that allows choosing power plans. It was intersting to see that in battery saving mode as soon as I disconnect the power the nice Aero interface is gone in a second, so it would not eat the battery. It is nice to know I don't need to configure this separately. (Actually in this case what I mean by Aero is the glass like transparency effects of the interface. The window borders and controls still look the same when turned off.). I did one battery test so far in Vista. With wireless on, battery saving selected I was able to get 2 hours and 50 minutes before the 10% mark. I did web browsing, some instant messaging in Live Messenger (MSN), writing some text and browsing Vista settings. I am quite satisfied with this result.

Overall it is a pleasure to be one of the first to own the ASUS V1JP in North America. This laptop has a lot to offer in terms of performance, quality, features and decent battery life. I would recommend this laptop to business users looking for performance, graphic designing, security features, flexibility and a docking station. This laptop is my first laptop, and it is a pleasure to own the ASUS V1JP.

Comment
Asus: Asus is an international manufacturer of medium size. In German and English speaking countries nowadays many notebooks of Asustec are reviewed. Nevertheless rather few laptop models achieve top-positions according total ranking and prize/value-rating.
Lower end of Graphics Cards for users who want to play games. New games should run on these cards, but only with decreased details and mediocre resolution.
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600: ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 is a middle class graphic card for notebooks of the X1000 series. Its performance can be compared with NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600.
These cards should be able to display all current games with fluent framerates but not all with high detail settings. Especially demanding games like Crysis, Age of Conan, or Mass Effect are only playable with lower settings. Less demanding (and older) games, like Fifa 08, Command & Conquer 3, or Battlefield 2142 can be played with higher detail levels.
ATI Mobility Radeon X1700: Successor of the X1600 and because of strained silicium process it can achieve a higher performance with the same current consumption (more shaders). The Avivo video engine helps decoding (HD) videos.
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT: The NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT is the DirectX 10 capable successor of the GeForce Go 7600 GT GPU for laptops. Depending on the used graphic memory and the clock speed, the performance is between the 7600 GT and 7900 GS video card.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650: The Hd 3650 is a middle class graphics card (in 2008) and compareable to an 8600M GT GPU from Nvidia. It is fabricated in 55nm process and due to Avivo video engine the graphic card can support the processor with several video operations (HD video too).
>> Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core Duo: Double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption. The 2 MB L2 Cache are used together by the double. The maximum capacity of 31 watts is only 4 watts more than with the Pentium M (predecessor). Both cores are lowered automatically and independently of each other by speed steps down to 1 GHz. In addition it now supports also SSE3 instructions. At least it is just as fast as a equivalent Pentium M. With applications, which were designed for multi-processors, the performance can be nearly twice as fast as with the Pentium M (e.g. CineBench around 86% fast)
Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.
15.4: 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays.
The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much current and the laptops can be kept quite compact.
>> To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
2.6 kg:
This notebook is lighter than the average of all notebooks. It is too heavy for sub-notebooks. 14 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.
3.01 kg:
This weight is average for notebooks. Therefore the numerous mass of laptops with 15 inch display fits in this class of weight.
81.67%: This rating is to be considered as average, because the amount of notebooks with better ratings is about equal like the amount with worse ratings.
