A slimline desktop replacement with a mighty battery life, the UL50 could be the laptop you’ve been waiting for. The big question is whether a 15.6in laptop can remain usable with such little raw power, but if your needs are undemanding - and you need superb battery life - this is a fine choice.

The phrase “slimline desktop replacement” may sound like an oxymoron, but the Asus UL50 is just that. Asus has squeezed a 15.6in display into a chassis that stands just 31mm high, and weighs a modest 2.41kg. From the moment you lay eyes on it, it’s clear the UL50 wants to go toe to toe with the Acer Aspire Timeline 5810T. A slimline desktop replacement with a mighty battery life, the UL50 could be the laptop you've been waiting for.

This year has undoubtedly been defined, if not by Netbooks, then by the growth of affordable thin laptops that shave size--and even optical drives--off in an effort to provide a more portable, larger-screened computer. The design and portability of the Asus UL50AG make it one of the slickest 15.6-inch DVD-drive-equipped laptops we've seen, but an ultralow-voltage processor compromises its computing power.

Naturally, one of the biggest considerations of any CULV laptop is its battery life. Unfortunately the manufacturer’s claims usually need to be taken with hefty pinch of salt, and as ever that proves to be the case here despite the high-capacity eight-cell (5,600mAh, 84Wh) battery. With its UL50Vg, Asus has created an impressive laptop that uses a range of technologies to offer a rare combination of power and portability for a very reasonable price. This makes it even more of a pity that some ill-considered design choices hold it back from a recommendation.

Slim Entertainer! With the UL range, Asus presents new notebooks with an especially slim and elegant design. The new range is divided into three display sizes. The UL30 models are equipped with a 13.3 inch screen and integrated Intel graphic chip set. The next UL80 model size works with a dedicated Nvidia GeForce G 210M graphic and a 14.0 inch display. The UL50 models are also based on the dedicated Nvidia G 210M graphic, but have a 15.6 inch display. The price range of the UL series is between 649 and 899 euro (RRP).

We're very impressed by the UL50VT. The battery life is phenomenal, while the Turbo 33 technology boosts performance to decent levels. While it still can't compete on power with the likes of the Sony, it is still a great laptop.

The 15.6-inch Asus UL50Vt is a paradox, wrapped in an enigma, obfuscated by a cloud of contradictions. Unlike many laptops of its size, the Asus UL50Vt is gorgeous to look at. A decent 15.6in screen notebook with CPU overclocking, but grainy display and high price tag could put off some buyers. The UL50vs is a decent 15.6in screen notebook with slight CPU overclocking capabilities, a nice aesthetic finish, and good graphical display capabilities that the majority of people will find acceptable. However, there are flaws, such as the keyboard being off centre and the resolution of the screen not being anywhere near its potential.

Optim{us/al?} The UL50VF is a 15.6" version of the slim Asus CULV laptops, and is equipped with NVidias "Optimus" which is able to switch graphics cards in the notebooks as needed. The notebook has a long list of great features: long battery life, low system noice, and is very light for a 15 inch laptop. You will find out more about how the UL50VF performed in our tests and what it has to offer in the following in-depth review.

The specific category that this notebook falls into makes it more difficult to compare it to other models on the market, especially as far as pricing goes. You’re likely to find faster notebooks than this one with a similar price tag, but the advantages offered by this model are currently unique. NVIDIA certainly deserves all possible commendations for its Optimus technology, making it the main contributor to the award bestowed upon this notebook.

If you value graphics performance (for photo editing, games, and like) as much as you do battery life, Nvidia, in concert with Asus, finally has a solution. The $849 UL50Vf offers solid graphics performance for midrange gamers. The standout part of this laptop, though: Nvidia's Optimus technology, which automatically balances graphics speed and battery life.

The ASUS UL50Vf is an unremarkable 15-inch notebook with some remarkable technology inside. Nine hours of battery life and the best switchable graphics solution currently on the market make this notebook a very compelling laptop. Unfortunately, the flexible plastic construction, low-resolution display, and a price tag above $800 make this a less than exciting purchase.

Intel's consumer ultra-low voltage (CULV) processors were initially used primarily in 13-inch systems like the Asus UL30A-A1 and Toshiba Satellite T135-S1305WH, but they are finding their way into larger laptops now. CULV processors require less cooling, so manufacturers are able to pare down the cooling methods that make other, more powerful laptops bulky and heavy. The Asus UL50VF-A1 is a gorgeous 15-inch laptop runs on a slower-than-average processor, but it can harness the strengths of two graphics cards and a new Nvidia technology.

Thanks to Nvidia’s smart Optimus technology, the $849 UL50VF-A1 offers both long battery life and graphics muscle. The Asus UL50VT is, in many ways, a full-fledged laptop with a large 15.6-inch screen, a DVD/CD burner, and a dedicated gaming graphics chip from Nvidia. With switchable Nvidia graphics and a thin design, the Asus UL50VT-RBBBK05 sacrifices power for longer battery life, while still managing to be a gaming-capable notebook. For its price, though, you could buy a laptop with a faster Core i3 CPU.

Fantastic mobility and high-speed network access, but build quality is poor Offering fantastic mobility and connectivity, without greatly sacrificing performance or screen size, the UL50AT is ideal for staying productive on the move. Its poor build quality lets it down, however, so carefully consider what is most important to you before buying.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. is a major Taiwanese computer hardware manufacturer based in Taipei, founded in 1989. Under the Asus brand name, the company manufactures a wide range of products, including laptops, desktops, motherboards, graphics cards, monitors, smartphones and networking equipment, complete systems and PC components for end users.
Under the ROG (Republic of Gamers) brand name, ASUS manufactures gaming laptops known by gamers for their powerful specifications, dedicated graphics cards, high refresh rate displays and advanced cooling systems.
Beyond gaming, a wide range of notebooks are offered for different needs and budgets, from ultra-slim and lightweight ultrabooks to versatile 2-in-1 convertibles and budget-friendly options. In 2023, Asus had a 7% global market share of the PC market.
Customer satisfaction with ASUS notebooks concerns performance, the features, and the good price-performance ratio of ASUS notebooks. However, as with any brand, there are occasional reports of problems such as overheating, driver compatibility, or build quality issues.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Onboard (shared Memory) GPU built in the GM45, GE45 and GS45 chipset (Montevina). Because of two more shaders and a higher core clock, much faster than the old GMA X3100. Still not advisable for gamers (DirectX 10 games not playable or only with very low settings). The integrated video processor is able to help decode HD videos (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , e.g., for a fluent Blu-Ray playback with slow CPUs.
NVIDIA GeForce G210M: The GeForce G210M is the successor of the G110M and also possesses 16 shader cores. Because of the 40nm process, the chip is clocked much higher but is still staying in the same power envelope.
These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on Mobile Intel 945GM chipset. It is a faster clocked version of the GMA 900 and supports no hardware T&L (Transform & Lightning) accelleration (which is required for some games).
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.
SU7300: Slow clocked dual core processor with a low TDP of 10 Watt.

With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
75.94%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
