The arrival of the Intel Core i processors and NVIDIA Optimus technology is a real boon for the world of laptops. The Asus U30Jc succeeds in combining good performance levels with decent battery life, in a 13.3 inch format still compact enough to satisfy those who want to carry it around with them. It's just a shame that its screen doesn't measure up.

I never quite understood the "Lifestyle" classification before, but with the Asus U30j it all suddenly makes sense - it enables you to do everything you want in your digital life. That said, the Asus U30j gains the recognition of an Editor's Choice award here at PC Perspective - for the money, I think you're getting more than one would expect for the price. With a stylish design, long battery life, and excellent performance, you can enjoy all the trappings this digital age has to offer without making a mad dash to a power outlet or worrying about the system slowing you down. Asus has pulled off a trifecta - speed, beauty, and efficiency. It's hard to be disappointed with that!

Asus U30Jc-A1 Review
Source: Digital Trends English Archive.org version
We’ve seen plenty of systems sucked into a vortex of mediocrity attempting to be everything to everyone, but Asus’ U30Jc pulls off this politician’s dance with the grace of a student body president: It’s attractive, equally appealing to jocks (gamers) and nerds (spreadsheet jockeys), and yet not from the snotty rich side of town (Apple?). Strained analogies aside, this is the system you’re looking for when you really can’t decide which niche mobile machine fits your needs best, or, as some reviewers seem to imagine, afford to buy a fleet of laptops for different scenarios.

ASUS U30Jc: Refining Thin and Light Performance
Source: AnandTech English Archive.org version
First, let me make it clear that there's really a lot to like with the U30Jc. It has a great design aesthetic, it's fast enough for all but the most demanding users, and it delivers great battery life. There are faster laptops out there at the same price, but they inevitably fall short in other ways. For instance, the Acer 5740G has much faster graphics but battery life tanks. The Alienware M11x (with reasonable upgrades like 4GB RAM) has fast switchable graphics, but driver support is a lingering question and even an overclocked CULV will struggle at times.

If you ask us, ASUS has struck gold with the U30Jc's Core i3 and NVIDIA Optimus combo, and we're crossing our fingers that Sony, Apple, Alienware and others follow ASUS down this path. While other 13-inchers may be lighter on the shoulder and some other mainstream laptops may pack more power, the $899 U30Jc buys you an incredible three-way balance of performance, graphics and endurance. And that's not something we say very often about a laptop that doesn't even set you back a grand.

We're fond of saying that the 13-inch laptop is so unique it deserves its own category in the laptop family tree. In general, a 13-inch system hits the sweet spot of being the biggest laptop we'd consider carrying around every day, and also the smallest we'd consider using on a daily basis for serious work. Asus has built a solid workhorse in the 13-inch U30Jc-1A that sacrifices some portability for gaming prowess, but still has great battery life.

The Asus U30Jc-1A is one of the few 13-inch laptops that run on a standard volt Intel Core processor while keeping your bank account out of the red. Three months after Intel launched its Core i3, Core i5, and Core i7 processors, we still haven't seen modestly-priced lightweight and ultraportable laptops that don't sacrifice power for battery life. While the somewhat expensive Editors' Choice Sony VAIO VPC-Z116GXS ($1,800 direct, ) and Lenovo ThinkPad X201 ($1,625 direct, ) both come equipped with an Intel Core i5 CPU, affordable alternatives that run on these processors are woefully scarce.

Asus did well by designing this machine in the way that they did. Right out of the box, it's stunning to look at. It's built tough and rigid, the brushed aluminum is of high quality, the trackpad is the best we have used and the "clean" look throughout assures you that Asus intends for this machine to handle serious work with ease. We really enjoyed the usability; having a multi-touch trackpad that worked well helped our productivity, and having a nice, spacious keyboard did as well.

The U30Jc is a worthy investment for those looking for good graphics performance and long battery life in a fairly portable 13-inch package. Just as important, this handsome aluminum-clad notebook has the brains to know when users require more muscle or more endurance. At $899, the U30JC costs $100 more than the Sony VAIO Y, but you get more power and more time away from an outlet.

Trying to eke out both long battery life and speedy performance—especially 3D performance—from a thin-and-light notebook can be a lesson in futility. But Asus’s new U-Series of thin-and-lights attempts gives it a very credible shot by employing Nvidia’s Optimus technology, which allows the notebook to engage its power-hungry graphics-processing unit (GPU) only when needed.  Long battery life, strong performance, and a generous warranty make this one of the best under-$1,000 thin-and-light laptops available.

The U30S is Asus’ new 2011 lineup that comes with Sandy Bridge CPU and Fermi 2 graphics. This 13.3 incher packs a pretty nice punch thanks to the Core i5 CPU running at 2.3GHz (2.9GHz in turbo) and Nvidia Geforce GT 520M graphics. Although the GT 520M is the slowest offering from the GT 5xxM series, we still managed to play Dirt 2 at 1366x768.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. is a major Taiwanese computer hardware manufacturer based in Taipei, founded in 1989. Under the Asus brand name, the company manufactures a wide range of products, including laptops, desktops, motherboards, graphics cards, monitors, smartphones and networking equipment, complete systems and PC components for end users.

Under the ROG (Republic of Gamers) brand name, ASUS manufactures gaming laptops known by gamers for their powerful specifications, dedicated graphics cards, high refresh rate displays and advanced cooling systems.

Beyond gaming, a wide range of notebooks are offered for different needs and budgets, from ultra-slim and lightweight ultrabooks to versatile 2-in-1 convertibles and budget-friendly options. In 2023, Asus had a 7% global market share of the PC market.

Customer satisfaction with ASUS notebooks concerns performance, the features, and the good price-performance ratio of ASUS notebooks. However, as with any brand, there are occasional reports of problems such as overheating, driver compatibility, or build quality issues.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

NVIDIA GeForce 310M: The GeForce 310M is the successor of the GeFore G210M and based on the same chip with very similar clock rates (shader speed +30MHz to 1530MHz).

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 520M: Entry level graphics card based on the new GF119 chip with a 64 Bit memory bus or on the GF108 with 128 Bit memory bus but lower clock rates.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core i3:

350M:

The Core i3-350M is technically a Core i5-430M without the Turbo Boost overlocking feature. Therefore, it always clocks with max. 2.26 GHz (of course Speedstep is included). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

2310M:

Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.1 GHz and features the Turbo Boost 2.0 only for the graphics card (650/1100MHz).

Intel Core i5:

430M:

The Core i5-430M is a middle class dual core CPU that features only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.26-2.53 GHz (Turbo Mode). Furthermore, VT-d, trusted Execution and AES features are missing in the 430M. Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (Intel HD Graphics with 500-733 MHz) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

2410M:

Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.3 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.6-2.9 GHz) and the GPU at 650 (1200 MHz Turbo).
