81.6% Asus ROG Strix GL502VT-DS74 Notebook Review | Notebookcheck
Thin, but not too thin. Asus seems to have struck a perfect balance in the race for a thinner and thinner gaming notebook while still maintaining case rigidity and enthusiast-level Nvidia GPU options. Inevitably, some important features have been omitted along the way.

It's rare for us to be this thoroughly impressed with a gaming laptop. Aside from the minor knock against battery life, there's nothing wrong with Asus ROG Strix GL502. In fact, almost everything else about the machine is stellar from the crisp keyboard, loud speakers, stunning screen and solid Full HD gaming experience. This is one of the best all-around gaming laptops we've ever reviewed, hands down, and we recommend it if you're in the market for a solid mobile PC gaming system.

The design of the ROG Strix GL502 is consistent with all the other Republic of Gamers products ASUS has released. If anything, the Strix GL502 is little more subdued than other ROG gear. There's just a few splashes of neon orange here and there to differentiate this gaming beast from your work laptop. It also only weighs 2.2kg and is 23.5mm thick - amazingly compact for a machine with a high-end CPU and GPU. You could easily transport this from home to work or school every day, unlike the gaming laptops of just a few years ago.

While we approach every review without any bias, we've come to expect good things from ASUS in the gaming category, and for the most part the ROG Strix GL502VT-DH74 delivers. At just 4.85 pounds, it's relatively lightweight for a gaming laptop, and its waistline of 0.92 inches is far skinnier than what you'll find on the bulk of desktop replacements out there.

A thin-and-light gaming notebook without compromise is something of an oxymoron—we have yet to test one. However, with each model we review, it’s becoming apparent to us that notebook makers are compromising less. The Asus RoG Strix GL502VT is standing evidence of that.

Well, the Asus GL502VT ROG Strix gaming laptop can’t really convince us, no? The machine itself has no too significant caveats for such a price. Performance is good as can be expected. Noise is relatively low. Keyboard and touchpad are quite good and comfortable. It is relatively thin and lightweight.

80% ASUS ROG Strix

For the size and the price, the $1,599 Asus ROG Strix GL502VT is definitely a keeper. Garish color accents aside, the 15.6-inch is fairly portable and packs a wallop. Even better, if offers a captivating 1080p display, a comfortable keyboard and nearly 6 hours of battery life. We just wish the GL502VT ran cooler and brought more bass.

Comment

Model: The Asus Strix GL502VT-DS74 is a laptop designed for gamers and multimedia enthusiasts who are looking for lightweight and thin laptop on-the-go. The Microsoft Windows 10 system features a 2,6 GHz Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor, an Nvidia GeForce GTX 970M, 16 GB DDR4 dual channel RAM, a 128 GB Lite-On SSD and a 1 TB hard drive. The chassis made out of black brushed aluminum with a black and neon orange ROG logo in the center of the lid is rated as above average in its quality and rigidity.

The 15.6- inch Full HD IPS display with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution provides rich colors, deep contrast and sharp details. Thus, it is suitable for gaming and watching movies. In addition, it comes with 4 different profiles; Normal, Eye Care, Manual and Vivid. The keyboard with backlight is easy and comfortable to type on and the touchpad is spacious, responsive and quick. The connectivity includes three USB 3.0 ports, a USB-C Gen 2 port, an HDMI port, a mini DisplayPort, a combo audio jack, a microphone/headphones jack and a micro SDXC card reader. The laptop weighs 2.491 kg and its battery life can last up to 5:56 hours on Wi-Fi surfing.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M:

Second fastest high-end graphics card based on the Maxwell GM204 chip from the GeForce GTX 900M series.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

6700HQ: Skylake-based quad-core processor for notebooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 530 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

15.60":

15-inch display variants are the standard and are used for more than half of all laptops.

The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, often allows high resolutions and thus offers rich details on the screen, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact - simply the standard compromise.
