Laptop speakers have always been pretty pants, but that could change if Asus' latest technology lives up to the hype. The company's created a new N-series range of laptops, including this 17.3-inch Asus N73Jn, that do away with the bog-standard audio gubbins you find in most laptops, in favour of speakers and amplifiers from the sound geniuses at Bang & Olufsen. The Asus N73Jn's speakers aren't as impressive as we'd hoped, but make no mistake, this 17.3-inch laptop is a fabulous all-round machine.

Audio Expert. We are sending the strong 17.3 incher into the race with a loud drum roll. Balanced midranges and trebles make you forget the taciturn basses. Will the quad CPU add the icing in terms of performance?

With such powerful hardware, the 6-cell 4400 mAh battery didn’t look too tough, and we weren’t surprised to see it collapse after less than an hour under considerable load, while a dimmed screen and lower load will provide you with a bit more than an hour and a half, hopefully. The cooling system is very efficient, and although the CPU has been known to reach 93 degrees when encoding video or playing games for an extended period of time, the user simply doesn’t feel this. Excess heat is efficiently exhausted on the sides, keeping the surface relatively cool. The fan is rather quiet, and we’ve been unable to really notice it during work. We believe that this model simply shines with weaker CPUs.

An i7 N73 will set you back around £900 which is pretty decent value when you consider the top-end technical specification, superb full-HD screen, cracking sound reproduction, attractive looks and generally very good built quality. Compared to a 17inch MacBook Pro it’s a bargain. The downside is the bouncy keyboard, but as I tend to use a remote keyboard when writing I could live with that.

The N73J is a well-built laptop that does little wrong, but it struggles to compete with its rivals here for power and features. However, its low price makes it ideal for those on a tighter budget.

A premium laptop for a less-than-premium price, the Asus N73Jn features an attractive design and excellent connectivity, backed by decent specifications. However, its otherwise good speakers are let down by noticeable distortion, its keyboard suffers from some rattle and flex, and its screen is sub-par. If you can live with these faults, it's a relatively affordable offering that's worth considering.

Overall, the ASUS N73SV is a desktop replacement with very good performance, plentiful storage and a nice Full HD screen. However, it's far from perfect. It could use a much better keyboard, a dual-band Wi-Fi adapter and seeing as how it has the capability to run two hard drives, we'd also like to have the ability to implement a RAID array.

Although it's expensive, we'd say the N73SV is good value. If you don't need your computer to be a laptop, or if you're a gamer, you can find a more powerful model much cheaper. We'd recommend this model to anyone looking for a powerful laptop for general home tasks, video-editing and playback.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. is a major Taiwanese computer hardware manufacturer based in Taipei, founded in 1989. Under the Asus brand name, the company manufactures a wide range of products, including laptops, desktops, motherboards, graphics cards, monitors, smartphones and networking equipment, complete systems and PC components for end users.
Under the ROG (Republic of Gamers) brand name, ASUS manufactures gaming laptops known by gamers for their powerful specifications, dedicated graphics cards, high refresh rate displays and advanced cooling systems.
Beyond gaming, a wide range of notebooks are offered for different needs and budgets, from ultra-slim and lightweight ultrabooks to versatile 2-in-1 convertibles and budget-friendly options. In 2023, Asus had a 7% global market share of the PC market.
Customer satisfaction with ASUS notebooks concerns performance, the features, and the good price-performance ratio of ASUS notebooks. However, as with any brand, there are occasional reports of problems such as overheating, driver compatibility, or build quality issues.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 335M: The GeForce GT 335M offers 72 shader cores (compared to the 48 of the GT 330M) and is based on the GT215 core (GTS 350M).
NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M: Successor of the GeForce GT 335M featuring DirectX 11 support and based on the GF108 chip.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M:
Mid-range graphics card based on the GT 435M chip (GF108) with higher clock rates and DDR3 support.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 325M: Slower clocked GeForce GT 330M middle class card and similar to the GT 230M.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 415M: The GT 415M is the slowest GT 400M announced in 09/2010 and features only half of the GF108 cores.

Intel Core i5:
450M: Should be similar to the Core i5-520M but without AES functions.
540M: The Core i5-540M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-620M) and clocks between 2.53-3.06 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD 3150) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
520M:
The Core i5-520M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.4-2.93 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD 3150) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
740QM:
The Core i7-740QM is a high-end quad-core CPU for laptops (in 2010) with a relative small base clock rate and a high Turbo Boost max frequency of 2.93 GHz (for one core). Therefore, it combines the advantages of a slow clocked quad core CPU with a fast single core one. Compared to the faster Core i7 mobile CPUs, the 740QM only features 6MB L3 Cache.
2630QM: Fast Quad-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
Intel Core i3:
370M: The Core i3-370M is a fast clocked Core i3. The TurboBoost, AES, VTd, and Trusted Execution functions are deactivated in the i3-series. Therefore, it always clocks with max. 2.4 GHz (of course Speedstep is included). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
2.7 kg:
With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
3.8 kg:
A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.
78.14%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
