Reviews for the Asus G1S

ASUS G1S
Source: PC Mag English Archive.org version
ASUS has been blazing high-tech trails with its dreamy laptop designs. Those who know the ASUS moniker are accustomed to its sleek form factors and use of the latest technology trends. Take, for example, the ASUS U1F and S6F, ultraportable designs geared toward road warriors, as well as for flaunting. At the other end of the spectrum is the ASUS G1S ($1,550 street), a high-performance laptop that ASUS is touting as a gaming machine. I'm more inclined to call it a multimedia laptop, with an above-average gaming card. Still, it addresses ASUS's lack of retail presence, one of my long-standing complaints. The G1S can now be found at your local Best Buy for a very reasonable price. ASUS puts a lot of emphasis on design, and it shows. The G1S's lid bears some resemblance to that of the Acer Ferrari 5000, which uses carbon fiber on its chassis.

80% Asus introduces Santa Rosa to gaming--for a bargain.
Source: Laptop Mag English Archive.org version
The G1S is one of Asus' first Intel Santa Rosa notebooks and carries a bargain price of $1,899. It's not the screamer machine serious gamers are hoping for, but mainstream users who happen to enjoy gaming will find a lot to like with this system. The Asus G1S looks the part of a gaming notebook, with a mix of matte-black and high-gloss carbon fiber plastic that does a decent job of resisting smudges and fingerprints.

Asus G1S-A1 Review
Source: Notebookreview.com English Archive.org version
The G1S-A1 is a great buy with solid build quality and good performance for the price. I definitely recommend this laptop. I also highly recommend getting this laptop from Gentech PC as they did a great job of accommodating my somewhat demanding requests for changes in configuration and shipping as well as my constant stream of questions.

Comment

NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT: The NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT is the DirectX 10 capable successor of the GeForce Go 7600 GT GPU for laptops. Depending on the used graphic memory and the clock speed,  the performance is between the 7600 GT and 7900 GS video card.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).

The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.

T7500:

The Core 2 Duo T7500 is a Merom based Core 2 Duo with 4MB Level 2 Cache. It is positioned in the middle class (in 2009) and performs on par with a modern P7550 or Turion II Ultra M640/M660.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

15.40":

15-inch display variants are the standard and are used for more than half of all laptops.

The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, often allows high resolutions and thus offers rich details on the screen, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact - simply the standard compromise.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

3.1 kg:

A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. is a major Taiwanese computer hardware manufacturer based in Taipei, founded in 1989. Under the Asus brand name, the company manufactures a wide range of products, including laptops, desktops, motherboards, graphics cards, monitors, smartphones and networking equipment, complete systems and PC components for end users.

Under the ROG (Republic of Gamers) brand name, ASUS manufactures gaming laptops known by gamers for their powerful specifications, dedicated graphics cards, high refresh rate displays and advanced cooling systems.

Beyond gaming, a wide range of notebooks are offered for different needs and budgets, from ultra-slim and lightweight ultrabooks to versatile 2-in-1 convertibles and budget-friendly options. In 2023, Asus had a 7% global market share of the PC market.

Customer satisfaction with ASUS notebooks concerns performance, the features, and the good price-performance ratio of ASUS notebooks. However, as with any brand, there are occasional reports of problems such as overheating, driver compatibility, or build quality issues.

82.11%: This rating is slightly above average, there are somewhat more devices with worse ratings. However, clear purchase recommendations look different.
