Asus ExpertBook B3 Flip in review: 2-in-1 laptop with digital stylus and LTE modem
The ExpertBook B3 is a 2-in-1 laptop from the business range. This model represents the entry-level of Asus' portfolio. We have already tested representatives of the midrange and the premium series with the ExpertBook B5 Flip and the ExpertBook B7 Flip. Case & Connectivity - The B3 Flip Has More Than Two Thunderbolt 4 Ports
Asus has chosen a matte, black case and a mix of materials, with metal for the back of the lid and plastic for the base unit. The clearances are even and there are no sharp edges. The base unit and the lid can be twisted slightly too easily. The battery is fixed and there is no such thing as a maintenance flap.
The convertible has two USB-C ports (1x USB 3.2 Gen 1, 1x USB 2.0). On top of that, it has two USB-C ports (Thunderbolt 4) supporting PowerDelivery and DisplayPort per USB-C. So all in all, the B3 has three video outputs including the dedicated HDMI port. The microSD memory card reader is one of the slower models (reference card: AV PRO microSD 128 GB V60).
The 2-in-1 device has two cameras on board: one webcam (0,9 MP) for video conferences and one camera (13 MP) for taking photos. The latter is placed above the keyboard and can be used in tablet mode. The webcam is a standard-quality model, but the 13-MP camera shows solid results.
The Wi-Fi chip (MediaTek MT7921) supports the standards 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax. Under ideal circumstances (no other Wi-Fi devices in proximity, small distance between laptop and server) the transfer rates are okay, but can't match today's devices and their options.
Intel's AX chips show significantly better results. Wireless connections can also be set up via the LTE network, thanks to a compatible modem (Fibocom L850-GL). The memory card reader and SIM card reader (nanoSIM) share a tray.

Input Devices - The Asus Computer Does Not Have A Backlit Keyboard
The even, smooth keys of the chiclet keyboard offer shallow travel and a distinct actuation point. The keyboard slightly yields while typing, but it's not too noticeable. All in all, Asus has created a keyboard that is suitable for everyday use. But the keyboard is not backlit, as we would expect from a laptop for 1,400 Euros (~1,586 USD).
The smooth, multi-touch ClickPad spans a surface area of about 10,5 x 6,2 cm (~4,1 x 2,4 in) and has good gliding properties. The pad precisely registers inputs even towards its edges. The travel of the clickpad is shallow with a distinct actuation point. Clicking in the top right corner opens the numeric keypad.
The touchscreen supports 10 touchpoints and registers inputs promptly. The screen can be used with your fingers or the included Asus input pen. There is a special slot for storing the stylus in the base unit, where it can also be charged.
Display - IPS on Board
The reflective 14-inch touchscreen display has a good contrast ratio (1893:1), but the brightness isn't very high. The measured values are far away from a good level (300 cd/m²) - 247 cd/m². There was no PWM flickering.

The IPS panel has good viewing angles and can be read from any position. Outdoors, the low display brightness and reflective surface make reading the screen very difficult at best.
Performance - Asus B3 With Tiger Lake CPU
Asus has created a 2-in-1 laptop from the business range with more than enough computing power for all office and internet tasks.
Test Conditions
The laptop supports three performance modes ('High Performance', 'Balanced', 'Whisper mode'). Users can switch in between them via the hotkeys 'Fn' + 'F'. We ran the test in 'Balanced Mode', while many other benchmarks were also taken with other modes. You can find the results in the comparison charts.

Processor
The quad-core Core i7-1165G7 (Tiger Lake) performs with a base clock of 2.8 GHz. Via turbo, this can be increased to 4.1 GHz (four cores) or 4.7 GHz (one core). The processor supports Hyperthreading and can handle two threads per core. During the multi-thread Cinebench R15 benchmark tests, the processor runs at 3.4 to 4.1 GHz and during the single-thread tests, the clock speed ranges from 1.8 to 4.7 GHz. In battery mode, clock rates are significantly lower.
By running the multi-thread test of the Cinebench R15 benchmark in a loop for at least 30 minutes, we determine whether the CPU Turbo is permanently active. The CPU Turbo lasts about two minutes using all the cores. Subsequently, three of the four cores run at clock speeds just below the base clock. The energy profile 'High Performance' leads to an increase in the clock rates.

System Performance
The system is responsive and smooth. The CPU delivers enough performance for office and internet use. Asus does not reach its full potential, though, because the firmly soldered RAM (16 GB) only runs in single-channel mode. The dual-channel mode can be activated by installing another memory module. The notebook has a free RAM slot.

A 512 GB NVMe SSD (M.2-2280) by Micron serves as the system drive and delivers good transfer rates overall, but it's not one of the top models among the Solid State Drives.

GPU Performance
The built-in Intel Iris Xe Graphics G7 (96EU) iGPU can permanently maintain its maximum clock speed of 1,300 MHz - as can be seen in The Witcher 3 test. The B3 is not a notebook for gaming, although the built-in hardware can display many games smoothly - at low resolutions and low quality settings.
The RAM only runs in the single-channel mode and does not allow the iGPU to reach its full potential. But there are options: activating the dual-channel mode (installing a second memory module) would increase the benchmark results as well as the frame rate while gaming (see comparison charts).

System Noise
During everyday use (office, internet), the fan often does not spin at all for completely silent operation. Under load, the noise level increases to up to 44.1 dB(A) - too much for a simple office notebook. In that respect, the competition has more to offer. With a 'Whisper mode,' the noise level decreases - at the expense of computing power.

Temperature
During everyday use (office, internet), the surface temperatures of the Asus Flip remain reasonable. Under load (stress test) the temperature rises in a few areas but still stays moderate on average.
At the beginning of the stress test (running Prime95 and Furmark for at least an hour), the CPU runs at 2.6 to 4 GHz. Throughout our stress test, the clock rates drop to the 1.3 to 2.8 GHz range. The clock of the graphics chip oscillates between 1,000 and 1,200 MHz. The stress test represents an extreme case. We use this test to determine whether the system is stable even under maximum load.

(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 43.6 °C / 110 F, compared to the average of 35.3 °C / 96 F, ranging from 19.6 to 55.7 °C for the class Convertible.

Energy Consumption
We recorded normal energy consumption values from the built-in hardware. The peak consumption of about 66 watts was reached at the beginning of the stress test. Throughout our stress test, this value drops, as the CPU slows down. The notebook can maintain a fairly consistent consumption level during The Witcher 3 test. The included USB-C power supply has a rated output of 65 watts and is sufficiently dimensioned to cover the notebook's needs.

Verdict - Solid, but with Some Weaknesses
The Asus ExpertBook B3 Flip is an inconspicuous 2-in-1 laptop that is equipped for all use cases. Network access is possible via Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and LTE. Two Thunderbolt 4 ports (PowerDelivery, Displayport) leave room for more upgrade options.
The ExpertBook B3 Flip is pretty good at what it does, but it struggles in areas in which a device that costs 1,400 Euros (~1,586 USD) should not.
The Core i7-1165G7 has good short-term burst performance, but it decreases under continuous loads. As it is relatively loud under load, the noise level can be reduced in 'Whisper mode'- by reducing the performance. Real-world battery life amounts to a total of 8 hours, but the B3's values are lower than the ones from its competitors.
The touchscreen display (FHD, IPS) offers a good contrast ratio, good viewing angles, and a solid color representation. The brightness and color accuracy fails to impress, though. The touchscreen display can be used with fingers or the included Asus pen for inputs. The latter is stowed away in the base unit, where it can also be charged.
The Lenovo ThinkBook 14s Yoga ITL could be an alternative to the Asus Convertible. It has a better display, a backlit keyboard, and longer battery life. It does not offer an LTE modem - not even optionally.

A similar version of the ExpertBook B3 Flip (equipped with the Core i7-1135G7, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, Windows 10 Pro) is currently available at Walmart.
