Reviews for the Asus Eee PC 1015PN
Power Pack. Asus launches yet another offshoot of the successful series with the Eee PC 1015PN. The highlights are a new Intel Atom N550, a dedicated Nvidia ION 2 graphics unit and a HDMI out. This configuration could represent the perfect blend of performance, mobility and functionality.

Visually, there's no way of telling the Asus Eee PC 1015PN from the other 1015 versions that we have also tested. The Asus Eee PC 1015PN associates the Atom N550 CPU with the new generation ION 8 Cuda chipset. In practice, it's the gain in battery life, more than performance, which gives it the edge over the 1015PEM.

Asus has more Eee PC Netbook varieties than we can practically count: if you've lost track, you're not alone. The compact 10-inch Asus Eee PC 1015PN offers a dual-core Atom processor and Nvidia Ion graphics for decidedly better-than-average Netbook performance, but premium ultraportables that aren't much more expensive can do better still.

Sure, the 1015PN differs from the other 1015 models out there, but we just wish it were more like its larger 1215N brother. While the 1015PN has a smaller footprint and slightly longer battery life, its processor just isn't as powerful and having to reboot every time you want to switch between graphics cards is a serious inconvenience.

The first 10-inch netbook with Nvidia Ion graphics offers plenty of pep but involves some trade-offs.

The Asus Eee PC 1015PN may be one of the most powerful 10 inch netbooks with an Intel Atom chip on the market today. Unfortunately with great power comes great less than stellar battery life. While the Eee PC 1015PN can handle 1080p HD video playback and some 3D graphics and gaming tasks, those capabilities come at the expensive of battery life, and you’ll be lucky to get between 4 and 6 hours of run time depending on how you use the laptop.

NVIDIA ION 2: ION2 is a GT218 graphics chip for Pinetrail Atom systems (D510, D410, N450) with 8 or 16 shader cores depending on the platform (10", 12", desktop). Compared to ION 1, ION 2 is a dedicated graphics card (connected only by a PCIe 1x due to the Pinetrail limitations) based on the GeForce 305M / 310M. Supports PureVideo HD to decode HD videos.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

Intel Atom: The Intel Atom series is a 64-Bit (not every model supports 64bit) microprocessor for cheap and small notebooks (so called netbooks), MIDs, or UMPCs. The speciality of the new architecture is the "in order" execution (instead of the usual and faster "out of order" execution). Therefore, the transistor count of the Atom series is much lower and, thus, cheaper to produce. Furthermore, the power consumption is very low. The performance per Megahertz is therfore worse than the old Pentium 3M (1,2 GHz on par with a 1.6 GHz Atom).
N550: Dual core Atom with a TDP of only 8.5 Watt. Because of the slow clock speed of 1.5 GHz it may be sometimes even slower than a N465 Atom CPU.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
10.1": The netbook/subnotebook has a quite small display format. Nonetheless, it is a common format for netbooks. The advantage is, that the subnotebook/netbook can be small dimensioned and can be carried easily. Further the small display has the advantage, that it needs few energy, which improves the battery runtime and in consequence the mobility. The disadvantage is that the reading of texts is a bit exhausting for the eyes. It is difficult to use high resolutions. » To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
1.28 kg: This subnotebook is one of the most lightweight of all notebooks and can be carried very easily. There exist only few sub-notebooks, which weight less. 10 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.
Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Incorporated, a Taiwanese multinational company, produces motherboards, graphics cards, optical drives, PDAs, computer monitors, notebook computers, servers, networking products, mobile phones, computer cases, computer components, and computer cooling systems. The company's 2007 revenues reached US$6.9 billion. ASUS also produces components for other manufacturers. The Eee PC initiated the netbook boom in 2008.
77.42%: This rating is not convincing. The laptop is evaluated below average, this is not really a recommendation for purchase.
