85% 2008's top three netbooks
Source: Reg Hardware English Archive.org version

Kit of the Year Launched as a product class in 2007, it was only in 2008 that the netbook hit the big time, with World+Dog rushing to follow Asus and launch one, and the rest of us dashing to buy one.

Would our choice of best 10in netbook go to Asus' Eee PC offering or the popular MSI Wind? In the end, we had to go with the netbook pioneer, primarily because there's not much to distinguish the two machine in spec but the Eee is capable of way greater runtime away from mains power. When it comes to longevity, it's the king of the netbooks, and the large screen size means it lacks the just-too-small keyboard of its stablemates.

The Eee PC 1000 has a better keyboard than the 901, but so does the Aspire one, the MSI Wind and most other netbooks. The Wind also has a 10in screen, but it feels more compact than the 1000. Only 802.11n and Bluetooth separate it from the herd, and how truly necessary are they, especially when you're paying extra for them? Ditto the 40GB SSD. No, if you want an Eee go for the 901, which is smaller and offers the same (market leading) battery life. If you must have a 10in SCC with plenty of storage, the Wind's the one.

The Asus Eee PC 1000's 10-inch screen walks a fine line between Netbook and regular laptop, but the higher price may drive away value-seeking consumers.

As the market crowds, we're getting increasingly spoilt for choice by mini laptops. With its higher price point of £369, the Asus Eee PC 1000 is in danger of pricing itself out of the low-cost market, even if it does boast the biggest slab of SSD storage this side of Apple's MacBook Air.

The Eee PC 1000, like the 1000H, is a compelling mini-notebook with a good-size screen and a spacious keyboard. We appreciated its zippy performance and nearly 5 hours of battery life, and the Linux interface remains refreshingly simple. However, you really have to like solid state drives to willingly pay $699 for this system when both the Windows XP–powered Eee PC 1000H and MSI Wind NB cost less than $600.

The largest Eee PC to-date, the 1000 may be suffering from size creep but it’s still a fantastic machine to use. The battery life is impressive and the build quality is still as high as ever. The only problem is, you need ask yourself, at this price, would you be better off opting for a standard notebook? We have a feeling the answer will be no.

At £369 for the EEEPC1000-BK002 with Linux and a 40Gb SSD, and £349 for the EEEPC1000-BK007X with Windows an 80Gb HDD (these are Asus' suggested retail prices, inc VAT), the Eee PC 1000 is priced similarly to the MSI Wind U10 and has pretty much the same specification in its Windows form too. Of course bountiful battery life is the ace up the Eee PC 1000’s sleeve and the ability to last for an entire working day is a deeply desirable feature. Of course the trade-off is in its size and weight, and the Eee PC 1000 is biggest, heaviest (in its Windows/HDD form) netbook so far available. Though perilously close to a normal laptop in terms of size, its outstanding battery life makes the Eee PC 1000 worth considering is prolonged mains-free use is your main concern.

The Eee PC 1000 is a fabulous machine. It precariously straddles the line between netbook and ultraportable, but it's well equipped, well designed and great for those who need a laptop on the move.

Though excellent in almost every respect, the price is a little too dear given that the Windows XP version of the same machine will retail for £20 less and feature a larger hard drive. If you fancy the form factor over the 9in 901 and lust after SSD storage it will serve you exceedingly well, but at this price it's not the one we'd recommend buying.

65% ASUS Eee PC 1000 Netbook Review: Features, Connectivity and Storage
Source: Bright Hub English Archive.org version
The ASUS Eee PC 1000 offers a mix of power and portability. It's an average rated netbook, but it is worth a look at when comparing others like it. Overall, users find it easy to use. It contains the needed software and high speed wireless connection (as well as bluetooth connectivity) that users look for too.

The Eee PC is a great netbook overall that can perform well for people needing a computer on-the-go. The Eee PC 1000 delivers great performance and has the neccessary applications a user needs on a portable PC. Of course, the Eee PC may not be as fast or as power as other netbooks; it is however a good one.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. is a major Taiwanese computer hardware manufacturer based in Taipei, founded in 1989. Under the Asus brand name, the company manufactures a wide range of products, including laptops, desktops, motherboards, graphics cards, monitors, smartphones and networking equipment, complete systems and PC components for end users.

Under the ROG (Republic of Gamers) brand name, ASUS manufactures gaming laptops known by gamers for their powerful specifications, dedicated graphics cards, high refresh rate displays and advanced cooling systems.

Beyond gaming, a wide range of notebooks are offered for different needs and budgets, from ultra-slim and lightweight ultrabooks to versatile 2-in-1 convertibles and budget-friendly options. In 2023, Asus had a 7% global market share of the PC market.

Customer satisfaction with ASUS notebooks concerns performance, the features, and the good price-performance ratio of ASUS notebooks. However, as with any brand, there are occasional reports of problems such as overheating, driver compatibility, or build quality issues.

These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on Mobile Intel 945GM chipset. It is a faster clocked version of the GMA 900 and supports no hardware T&L (Transform & Lightning) accelleration (which is required for some games).

Intel Atom: The Intel Atom series is a 64-Bit (not every model supports 64bit) microprocessor for cheap and small notebooks (so called netbooks), MIDs, or UMPCs. The speciality of the new architecture is the "in order" execution (instead of the usual and faster "out of order" execution). Therefore, the transistor count of the Atom series is much lower and, thus, cheaper to produce. Furthermore, the power consumption is very low. The performance per Megahertz is therfore worse than the old Pentium 3M (1,2 GHz on par with a 1.6 GHz Atom).

Z530:

Power saving version of the Atom N270 with additional Virtualization Support and more power saving techniques. The performance is equal to the N270 and therefore only suited for basic tasks.

N270:

Power efficient, cheap and slow Netbook single core CPU. Because of the in-order execution, the performance per MHz is worse than Core Solo or Celeron M processors.

77.54%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
