The popular tablet family could soon get a split screen mode that allows users to simultaneously run two apps, claim the latest rumors.

Apple's iPad family dominates the tablet PC market, but that does not mean there is no room for improvement. While the hardware will remain unchanged for the time being, iOS 8 is expected to bring a few new features and the most important one is split-screen multitasking.

According to sources familiar with this matter quoted by 9to5Mac, the new split-screen multitasking feature will allow iPad users to interact with two apps that run at once and each is displayed on half of the screen. Microsoft's Surface family of slates has a multitasking feature which is popular in the business environment and allows users to snap multiple apps on the screen and use them simultaneously.

The split-screen multitasking expected to arrive with iOS 8 will also allow users to move data between apps via drag and drop and this means developers will finally be able to design apps that share content. For now, it is known that this feature will work in landscape mode only and most chances are it will not be available on iPads with screens smaller than 9.7-inch.

All the above should be taken with a grain of salt for now, but an official confirmation could arrive soon. iOS 8 will be unveiled on June 2, together with a redesigned version of Mac OS X.
