Apple files for iWatch trademark in Japan

Teaser
Apple has yet to confirm whether it is actually working on a smartwatch with the name iWatch, but now the company has potentially confirmed such plans by applying for trademark protection for the term "iWatch" in Japan.

While Apple's potential smartwatch has sparked rumors for quite some time, Cupertino has not officially confirmed that it's working on such a device. However, according to a Bloomberg report, Apple has already taken the first steps by filing for trademark protection for "iWatch" in Japan. This was allegedly filed as early as June 3 with the Japan Patent Office.

The rumors about Apple's smartwatch were revived this February, when it was claimed that about 100 product designers were working on a wristwatch-like device. Other rumors have asserted that manufacturers such as Google, LG and Microsoft are also developing a smartwatch.

Sony has already had such devices on the market for some time, and recently unveiled the SmartWatch 2 at Mobile Asia World Expo 2013.
