Alcatel 3X 2020 Smartphone Review - Battery power full

Thick sandwich. The Alcatel 3X wants to convince with a lot of memory and a 5.000 mAh battery. It is joined by a quad camera, the heart of which is a 48-MP sensor. Sounds promising and can convince in the test in many areas. However, as the price of around 180 euros suggests, some compromises have to be made.

Case, equipment and operation

The Alcatel 3X (2020) is available in black and petrol. The plastic case is cleanly processed and despite the large battery not too heavy. The hybrid SIM slot can hold either two nano-SIMs or a microSD card instead of the second SIM

The equipment is quite typical for this price class, but above all it can't keep up with that of the Redmi smartphones. Despite a jack plug, there is no integrated Ukw radio receiver. However, the microSD slot supports the exFAT file system

Unfortunately, NFC does not exist and the WLAN module also only supports the IEEE 802.11 standards b/g/n, so that only the 2.4 GHz network can be used and also the speeds are quite low in combination with our reference router Netgear Nighthawk AX12

The voice quality of the Alcatel 3X is quite good and delivers a solid performance when the smartphone is held to the ear. The suppression of ambient noise works properly, only extremely loud noise causes intermittent interruptions. The speaker does reverberate a bit, but can be quite convincing in a quiet environment

As operating system Google Android 10 is used, over which the manufacturer touches its own UI, which has a good user guidance. At the time of testing, the security updates are as of October 5, 2020, where an additional patch per quarter can be expected

A fingerprint sensor on the back is responsible for biometric security, which is not one of the fastest, but works reliably. Face recognition unlocks more quickly, but is only two-dimensional and therefore less secure. The system speed is a bit sluggish. Again and again there are small juddering movements, which is mainly due to the weak SoC

Selfie with the Alcatel 3X
Selfie with the Alcatel 3X

In addition to the 48-MP main camera, TCL provides the Alcatel 3X with ultra-wide angle, macro and depth optics. However, these are rather nice accessories and are not really convincing with their imaging performance

It is different with the main camera, which succeeds in taking balanced photos in daylight. The digital zoom is limited to a fourfold magnification despite the high sensor resolution. But its quality is surprisingly good and is suitable for everyday use

The selfies are a little pale, but deliver a good image sharpness and a quite balanced composition. Only with bright backgrounds, burnt out areas appear quickly

The Alcatel 3X (2020) can at best record videos in Full HD with up to 30 frames per second

Display - High contrast IPS panel in Alcatel 3X

Subpixel structure
Subpixel structure

The 6.52-inch IPS display of the Alcatel 3X (2020) can become quite bright at almost 500 cd/m² and can also provide this luminosity with an even distribution of light and dark areas (APL50) as well as in manual mode

For a full black display, the panel appears to be additionally dimmed, allowing for a bearish contrast ratio. With APL50 measurement, the black level rises again and reaches 0.24 cd/m². This causes the contrast ratio to drop to 2,133:1, which is still an excellent value

The panel only has to accept criticism regarding the resolution and the missing DRM certification will annoy streaming fans

Display Response Times

Display response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.
       Response Time Black to White
20.8 ms ... rise ↗ and fall ↘ combined↗ 8.4 ms rise
↘ 12.4 ms fall
The screen shows good response rates in our tests, but may be too slow for competitive gamers.
In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.1 (minimum) to 240 (maximum) ms. » 40 % of all devices are better.
This means that the measured response time is similar to the average of all tested devices (21.5 ms).
Response Time 50% Grey to 80% Grey
45.6 ms ... rise ↗ and fall ↘ combined↗ 22 ms rise
↘ 23.6 ms fall
The screen shows slow response rates in our tests and will be unsatisfactory for gamers.
In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.2 (minimum) to 636 (maximum) ms. » 75 % of all devices are better.
This means that the measured response time is worse than the average of all tested devices (33.7 ms).

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.
Screen flickering / PWM not detected

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 17900 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured.

Performance, emissions and battery life

The system performance of the SoC in the Alcatel 3X (2020) is not really convincing. Although the user interface can be navigated quite smoothly, even the start of the browser sometimes takes several seconds. If you like to play games, you have to be satisfied with undemanding casual games, more complex titles can be played, but then you have to expect jerkiness even with low details. However, the tight performance also ensures that the surface temperatures remain at a low level at all times

The Alcatel smartphone's loudspeaker has a background noise audible in quiet sequences, but otherwise delivers a solid sound. With the audio jack, the user has to be satisfied with below average quality. In addition, TCL does without a radio receiver despite the analog interface

In terms of battery life, the Alcatel 3X makes up some ground. We were able to surf the WLAN for almost two days without interruption. In everyday life, four to five days of moderate use should be possible with one battery charge

In review: Alcatel 3X (2020). Test device provided by TCL Germany.
In review: Alcatel 3X (2020). Test device provided by TCL Germany.

The Alcatel 3X (2020) convinces in the test especially with its good display and enormously long battery life. The panel shines with a good luminosity and strong contrast, the slight blue cast does not catch the eye negatively in everyday life, as the lower pixel density can be rather annoying. However, this helps the TCL smartphone to very good battery life, so that we find this an acceptable compromise

The camera setup is also not bad at all. The main lens provides good pictures in daylight and the front camera also convinces with balanced selfies. Only the three additional lenses on the rear side let a lot of quality air up

The Alcatel 3X (2020) offers a long-lasting battery, a high-contrast IPS panel and a decent camera at a fair price

The main drawback is the performance. The system speed is still decent, but the Alcatel cell phone reaches its limits at the latest with more complex apps. The communication modules are also quite poorly equipped and do not allow high transmission values
