Despite the overall disappointing performance of the TravelMate 8481T-6440, Acer does make some compelling arguments to consider it. This laptop has superb battery life, a light travel weight, and a beautiful design. Plus, though the warranty Acer offers on this notebook is an industry-standard-length one-year plan, it's Acer's International Travelers' Warranty, so you can get tech help for this machine anywhere in the world.

At $999, Acer TravelMate TimelineX 8481T-6440 is one sleek and long-lasting laptop for highly mobile users. It offers a large 14-inch screen in a 13-inch size package, solid performance, very long battery life, and welcome security features. While we wish Acer included a backlit keyboard, this notebook is a very good choice for business users on the go. If you're looking to save some money, the $749 Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E420s offers comparable performance and a more comfortable keyboard, but is heavier and doesn't last as long on a charge. But if portability is paramount, then the TimelineX 8481T is the notebook to take with you on the road.

So after an excellent start with the overall design, the dim display and average ergonomics can’t help but knock the Acer’s appeal somewhat. It’s a long way from perfect, but with its long battery life and light weight, along with a reasonable price, it shouldn’t be totally written off by businesses on a medium budget.

The Acer TravelMate Timeline 8481T is a very svelte laptop for the travelling businessman. Sadly, its odd battery bulges out of the back making it more awkward to fit into a case. With a slim bezel, fair performance and various security features, it's a decent choice for the business-minded among you.

I will say the Acer TravelMate 8481T-6873 is a surprisingly good little system. It should be; it's geared more towards professional users. Acer has done a good job with the majority of the fit and finish of the 8481T; the black brushed aluminum, solid body, and healthy battery life make it a notebook that most people would probably be happy to use on the go, and there's plenty of power under the hood, too.

The Acer TravelMate 8481T is a good choice for office work on the move, though our sample was a little less convenient to carry around than other lightweight laptops due to the odd-shaped battery. It's not going to weigh you down too much at 1.7kg and the 11-hour runtime will be a godsend for unplugged productivity. It's not the speediest laptop around but neither is it undesirably slow; and the good screen is perfect for use in a variety of lighting conditions. You'd be pushed to find a better business-focused model with this specification for this price.

When it comes to battery life, Acer's TravelMate 8481T is the laptop to beat. It's not all that surprising when you see the battery protruding from the back of the chassis, practically doubling the breadth of the machine.

For the most part, any notebook aimed at the mobile business user should have good battery life above practically everything and that’s something the i5 version of the TM8481T has in spades, it could do with some more memory especially as it uses a 64-bit OS and it does lack an optical drive but overall it’s a decent enough notebook for any business where the budgets might be a bit tight.

Acer: In 1976, the company was founded in Taiwan under the name Multitech and was renamed Acer or Acer Group in 1987. The product range includes, for example, laptops, tablets, smartphones, desktops, monitors, TVs and computer peripherals. Since 2007, the group has merged with Gateway Inc. and Packard Bell, which also market their own laptop product lines.
Acer computers are designed for a variety of purposes, including ultrabooks for mobile use, gaming laptops for gamers, affordable options for everyday tasks, and 2-in-1 convertible laptops for versatility. Acer's product portfolio also includes tablets that offer portable computing and multimedia capabilities.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
Intel HD Graphics 3000: Integrated graphics card in the Intel Sandy Bridge processors (Core ix-2xxx). The HD 3000 is the faster (internally GT2 called) version with 12 Execution Units (EUs).
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 520M: Entry level graphics card based on the new GF119 chip with a 64 Bit memory bus or on the GF108 with 128 Bit memory bus but lower clock rates.

Intel Core i5:
2557M: Power saving ULV processor clocked at 1.7-2.7 GHz due to Turbo Boost. Offers an integrated HD 3000 clocked at slow 350 / 1200 MHz and a DDR3-1333 memory controller.
2467M: Power saving ULV processor clocked at 1.6-2.3 GHz due to Turbo boost. Offers an integrated HD 3000 clocked at slow 350 / 1150 MHz and a DDR3-1333 memory controller.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
2677M: Power saving ULV processor clocked at 1.8-2.9 GHz due to Turbo Boost. Offers an integrated HD 3000 clocked at slow 350 / 1200 MHz and a DDR3-1333 memory controller.
2637M: Power saving ULV processor clocked at 1.7-2.8 GHz due to Turbo Boost. Offers an integrated HD 3000 clocked at slow 350 / 1200 MHz and a DDR3-1333 memory controller.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

70.25%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
