Acer’s machines were once more known for its functionality rather than its finery. The Swift series seems to defy this notion as Acer shifts towards building well-crafted devices both in its interior and exterior. The Acer Swift 3 is a subnotebook built for everyday use. It is built on an all-metal chassis which assures users of its solidness. With a 14-inch form factor it is amazingly slim with a sleek metal finish. At a glance, it looks a little bit like the Apple Macbook Air. Toting this ultrathin laptop about will surely grab attention. Its dimensions measure at 1.78 x 34.04 x 23.63 cm (0.7 x 13.4 x 9.3 inch) and it is lightweight at approximately 1,5 kg (3.31lbs). For now, it is shipped only in silver colour, which most might consider the best color for a laptop. Its 14-inch display (Full HD Active Matrix TFT Color LCD) uses IPS technology and is driven by an Intel HD Graphics 520 GPU with shared DDR4 SDRAM. Colors appear bright with strong details. The precision touchpad with multi-touch control is wide and sensitive. The keyboard bundled together is backlit for use under dim environments and is good for typing on. Notwithstanding its sleek profile, Acer has certainly not compromised on its hardware as its specs prove to be equally impressive. It runs on an Intel Core i7-6500U processor with 8 GB DDR4 SDRAM. In terms of storage, it is fitted with a huge 512 GB M2 SSD. Storage is also expandable via an SD card. Wireless connectivity on this notebook is swift as suggested by its name. The devices uses 2x2 802.11ac MU-MIMO technology. For added security, swipe-style fingerprint scanner unlocks the laptop quickly. One may question the Swift 3’s battery life from its slimness; yet Acer assures a 10-hour battery life, which is sufficient for the Swift 3 to “stay unplugged on a flight from Dubai to Hong Kong…” This will definitely appeal those who wish to stay productive on their laptops. This laptop is also installed with high end connectivity options which include one HDMI port, one USB 2.0 port, one USB 3.0 port and one USB 3.1 (Type-C) port. It would also be nice to see the Type-C port capable of supporting Thunderbolt. Sound quality is crisp and clear. The Swift 3 comes pre-installed with Windows 10. The Acer Swift 3 is a near-perfect laptop for those who want an ultraportable, but don’t want to fork out £1000+. Build quality is great, battery life very good, and performance a match for much more expensive laptops. There are just two areas where the low price shows. First, it's a little thicker and heavier than some ultrabooks. It looks good enough, but limited maximum brightness and fairly poor colour reproduction limits its usefulness in certain situations.

It captures a lot of the old S 13’s spirit, only in a new all-metal body plus a few bells and whistles. The way I see it, the only issue with purchasing one would be that the Swift 3 only comes in one configuration, so if you want, say 8GB of memory, you can’t buy a higher spec. Otherwise, this is a pretty solid laptop.

The Swift 3 is the budget-friendly version of Acer’s flagship Ultrabook, the Swift 7 (Review). In India, Acer has had to make certain compromises with the units being sold here in order to keep the price as aggressive as possible. In a way, it has worked in Acer's favour, as you’d be hard pressed to find any slim laptop with these specifications at this price right now. The pricing of Dell’s XPS 13 (Review) starts at above a lakh while HP’s Envy 13-d115tu sits slightly below it. Most of the models that are priced in the range of the Swift 3 have a Core i5 CPU, but then again, they also usually have full-HD displays, which the Swift 3 lacks.

Acer Swift 3 SF315-51G-55Z9

The Acer Swift 3 SF315-51G-55Z9 is a compact multimedia notebook with a ULV dual-core processor, the new Nvidia GeForce MX150, 8 GB RAM, and an IPS Full HD display. The device is also suitable for mobile office use and can handle the more demanding software without any problems, thanks to the security features and a good battery life. In addition to the 128 GB system SSD, there is also a conventional hard drive with a 1 TB capacity. Acer provides this model with a metal case. Acer put neat silver edges around the base, the touchpad, and the fingerprint scanner. These form the visual highlights, together with the edgy hinge typical for Acer and the silver Acer lettering on the back. However, the top of the base and the lid have a brushed-metal finish which makes fingerprints stand out. Acer has chosen a reflective IPS display with a 15.6-inch diagonal in Full HD resolution, which appears razor-sharp, despite its mediocre 141 PPI. Thanks to the lowest black value of the competition in the test at 0.18 cd/m², the Swift 3 achieves a very good contrast of 1,378:1 despite low brightness. Since the display is reflective and not particularly bright, it is difficult to impossible to escape the ever-present reflections outdoors, even in the easier conditions of a cloudy day. As for the processor, the current Core i5-7200U is probably the most widely used Intel Kaby-Lake ULV processor, which is often encountered in office or business and multimedia notebooks in particular. Thanks to its two cores with Hyper-Threading and a basic clock speed of 2.5 GHz to 3.1 GHz (Turbo), it handles even the most demanding tasks without any complaints, but it is less suitable for demanding games. With the new Pascal-based GeForce MX150 (Laptop GT 1030, GP-108 chip), Nvidia has finally introduced into the market the long-anticipated successor of the widely used but now outdated GeForce 940MX, which could or can often be found in multimedia laptops. The standard memory capacity is 2 GB of GDDR5-VRAM with an effective clock speed of 6000 MHz. The MX150 represents a clear improvement compared to CPU graphics such as the Intel HD 620. It enables medium presets at 1.366 x 768 pixels even in many of the current games. Right-handed people will thank Acer for positioning the only USB-2.0 port, which is intended for an external mouse, sensibly far back on the right side. Next to it is just the card reader, from which half of the SD card will still stick out, and the opening for the Kensington lock. In this way, there can be no collisions between cables and USB sticks. The USB 3.0, HDMI, and audio ports are in the back area of the left side. Acer deserves praise for this almost ideal positioning of the ports. The Acer Swift 3 SF315-51G-55Z0 has a fingerprint-sensor for placing the finger. After a setup procedure with Windows Hello, the laptop could be unlocked quickly and reliably with it. A Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0 is also included. Sadly, the special edition Acer Swift 3 falls short in truly representing Iron Man. While it does nail the look and feel of Tony Stark’s bad-ass form, it lacks the firepower and performance. The laptop though is a good fan service for Marvel fans. It has an excellent Iron Man design and feel, a good display, an enjoyable keyboard, and a good selection of ports. On the flip side, however, it has some irritating downsides like the thick bezels, the problematic trackpad, and the choked exhausts.

Oh, how much we want an equal competitor to Intel – to have a choice of manufacturer, without losing performance, only because you don’t want to be mainstream. Behold! The Ryzen 7 2700U finally gives us an adequate comparison between a “red” and a “blue” equipped machinery. Acer Swift 3 (SF315-41) definitely provides a lot of horsepower to the user, be it a presenter or a multimedia geek, who needs the things to happen on the go.

The combination of AMD’s Ryzen mobile, along with a good design, and excellent specifications for the price, really do make the Acer Swift 3 an appealing proposition. We’ve never tested a laptop at this price point with a 512 GB SSD before, and the 8 GB of DDR4 is very welcome as well at this price. If you can get over the poor quality keyboard, there’s a lot of laptop for the dollar here, and the ability to actually run real games is a welcome change.

The Acer Swift 3 Ryzen variant is a worthy option for its price which offers the best in class build quality, a decent keyboard and a usable display. Thanks to Ryzen 2500U, performance is just as good as any other 8th gen Intel Core i5 variant and the offers a better graphics support over the integrated GPU available with Intel chips. In our opinion, the average battery is the only low point for this laptop, but there is little reason to complain considering the price.

The 15-inch Swift 3 SF315-52G is a mid-tier computer with a nicely designed and built chassis, a fast keyboard, a matte IPS screen, good performance and good battery life. The aggressive pricing remains however its main selling point and the reason why you'd accept its quirks, even if none are necessarily deal-breakers: the dim screen, the average speakers, Wi-Fi speed and IO. Acer: In 1976, the company was founded in Taiwan under the name Multitech and was renamed Acer or Acer Group in 1987. The product range includes, for example, laptops, tablets, smartphones, desktops, monitors, TVs and computer peripherals. Since 2007, the group has merged with Gateway Inc. and Packard Bell, which also market their own laptop product lines.

Acer computers are designed for a variety of purposes, including ultrabooks for mobile use, gaming laptops for gamers, affordable options for everyday tasks, and 2-in-1 convertible laptops for versatility. Acer's product portfolio also includes tablets that offer portable computing and multimedia capabilities.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

Intel HD Graphics 520: Integrated GPU (GT2) with 24 EUs found on some Skylake CPU models (15 W ULV series).

Intel HD Graphics 620: Integrated GPU (GT2) found on some Kaby-Lake CPU models (15 W ULV series).

NVIDIA GeForce MX150: Pascal GP108 based laptop graphics card and mobile version of the desktop GeForce GT 1030. Offers 384 shader cores and usually 2 GB GDDR5 with a 64 Bit memory bus. Manufactured in 14nm.

AMD Vega 8: Integrated graphics card of the Ryzen APUs based on the Vega architecture with 8 CUs (= 512 shaders) and a clock of up to 1100 MHz.

AMD Vega 10: Integrated graphics card of the Ryzen APUs based on the Vega architecture with 10 CUs (=640 shaders) and a clock of up to 1300 MHz.

AMD Radeon RX 540: Polaris based mid-range graphics card with 512 shaders (8 compute units) and a maximum clock speed of 1,219 MHz (according to AMD). Uses the new Polaris 12 chip like the faster Radeon RX 550 (not verified but highly likely) with the slightly improved 14nm FinFET process.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

6500U: Skylake-based ULV dual-core processor for thin notebooks and ultrabooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 520 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.

Intel Core i5:

6200U: Skylake-based ULV dual-core processor for thin notebooks and ultrabooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 520 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.

Intel Core i3:

6006U: Skylake-based ULV dual-core processor for thin notebooks and ultrabooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 520 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm. The maximum clock speed is only 2 GHz and Turbo Boost is not supported.

Intel Kaby Lake:

i7-7500U: Kaby-Lake based SoC with two CPU cores clocked at 2.7 to 3.5 GHz, HyperThreading and manufactured with an improved 14nm process.

i5-7200U: Kaby-Lake based SoC with two CPU cores clocked at 2.5 to 3.1 GHz, HyperThreading and manufactured with an improved 14nm process.

Intel Kaby Lake Refresh:

i5-8250U: Kaby-Lake-Refresh based low power quad-core processor. The four cores are clocked between 1.6 and 3.4 GHz (Turbo Boost) and support HyperThreading. The integrated GPU is clocked between 300 and 1,100 MHz. The SoC is manufactured in a 14nm+ FinFET process.

i5-8550U: Kaby-Lake-Refresh based low power quad-core processor. The four cores are clocked between 1.8 and 4 GHz (Turbo Boost) and support HyperThreading. The integrated GPU is clocked between 300 and 1,150 MHz. The SoC is manufactured in a 14nm+ FinFET process.

i3-8130U: On the Kaby-Lake architecture based dual core SoC clocked at 2.2 to 3.4 GHz with HyperThreading (4 Threads) and an integrated UHD Graphics 620 graphics card clocked at up to 1 GHz.

AMD Raven Ridge (Ryzen 2000 APU):

R5 2500U: Mobile APU that integrates four Zen cores clocked at 2 to 3.6 GHz. The TDP is configurable between 12 to 25 Watt (15 W nominal) and the integrated Radeon RX Vega 8 is clocked at up to 1100 MHz.

R7 2700U: Mobile Quad-Core APU using Zen cores clocked at 2.2 to 3.8 GHz and a Vega graphics card with 10 CUs clocked at up to 1300 MHz.

14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.

The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.

In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
