The Acer Spin 3 SP314-51-548L i5-8250U is a 14-inch mid-range convertible notebook. Acer’s 360° hinge supports the slim, durable design of the Spin 3 while providing four different modes for users to enjoy. The Spin 3 does not feature a metal case, unlike many laptops around these days. Its case is made mostly of plastic. The upper side of the chassis and the display lid are gray, while the underside is black. The upper side of the chassis is brushed and the display lid has straight lines that are enhanced with textured patterns. The Precision Touchpad is more responsive than traditional touchpads helping users work more effectively. The multitouch-enabled ClickPad occupies an area of some 10.5 x 6.5 cm (4.1 x 2.5 in). Therefore, there is enough space for the use of gesture controls. The smooth surface of the pad makes finger-gliding easy. Acer also equipped the Spin 3 with a chiclet-style unlit keyboard. The flat, slightly rough keys have a short travel distance and a clear actuation point. The 14-inch touch-enabled display of the Spin 3 operates with a native resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. The screen offers a good contrast ratio of 1,222:1. Besides that, the display offers a fairly good color reproduction. However, the display brightness is too low. Therefore, the convertible is only usable at indoor environments. The Spin 3 comes with a Core i5-8250U, which is a mid-range, quad-core ULV CPU from Intel. Acer uses 8 GB RAM and a SATA-III SSD from Micron with a capacity of 256 GB. However, only 207 GB are available to the user. The RAM runs in dual-channel mode, so the GPU is better utilized. As a result, it performs better than laptops with RAM that runs in single-channel mode. As for graphics, the Spin 3 uses Intel’s UHD Graphics 620 for image rendering. It supports DirectX 12. The laptop has more than enough computing power for such usage scenarios as office work and Internet browsing. However, it is not an ideal device for gaming. The GPU of the Spin 3 can only achieve playable frame rates in games that have low system requirements. The stereo speakers are located on the underside of the device behind a perforated cover. They produce a voluminous sound. User can experience optimum sound quality as Acer’s TrueHarmon and Smart Amplification enhance their audio. For battery life, the Acer Spin 3 claims to offer a battery life of up to 12 hours. The device is designed to stay at user’s side for the entirety of the day with long battery life. Intel Kaby Lake:

i3-7130U: Kaby Lake based ULV SoC with two CPU cores clocked at 2.7 GHz (no Turbo Boost) and with HyperThreading (4 Threads at once). Features an integrated HD Graphics 620 at 1GHz.

Pentium 4415U: Kaby-Lake-based ULV dual-core processor for thin notebooks and ultrabooks. Compared to the Core i3-7100H, the 4415U is clocked slower (2.3 versus 3 GHz), offers less Level 3 cache and a slower GPU. Both a manufactured in the same 14nm process.

i3-7020U: Kaby-Lake based SoC with two CPU cores clocked at 2.3 GHz (no Turbo Boost), HyperThreading and manufactured with an improved 14nm process.

Intel Kaby Lake Refresh:

i5-8250U: Kaby-Lake-Refresh based low power quad-core processor. The four cores are clocked between 1.6 and 3.4 GHz (Turbo Boost) and support HyperThreading. The integrated GPU is clocked between 300 and 1,100 MHz. The SoC is manufactured in a 14nm+ FinFET process.

i3-8130U: On the Kaby-Lake architecture based dual core SoC clocked at 2.2 to 3.4 GHz with HyperThreading (4 Threads) and an integrated UHD Graphics 620 graphics card clocked at up to 1 GHz.

Intel Core i3:

i3-8145U: Whiskey Lake based low power dual-core processor (technically identical to Kaby Lake but produced in a further improved 14nm++ process). The two cores are clocked between 2.1 and 3.9 GHz (Turbo Boost) and support HyperThreading.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.  

i7-8565U: Whiskey Lake based low power quad-core processor (technically identical to Kaby Lake but produced in a further improved 14nm++ process). The four cores are clocked between 1.8 and 4.6 GHz (Turbo Boost) and support HyperThreading.

AMD Picasso (Ryzen 3000 APU):

R5 3500U: Mobile Quad-Core APU using Zen+ cores clocked at 2.1 to 3.7 GHz and a Vega iGPU with 8 CUs running at up to 1200 MHz.

Intel Alder Lake-M:

i5-1235U: On Alder-Lake based mobile CPU with 2 performance cores and 8 efficient cores. The performance cores offer hyper threading, leading to 12 threads that can be processed. The CPU clocks from 0.9 to 4.4 GHz. The TDP is specified at 15 Watt.

14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.

The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact. 

In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
