Acer Aspire V7 Series

Acer Aspire V7-482P

The Acer Aspire V7 is a portable 15.6 inch laptop and also a comfortable desktop replacement. It features a great battery life and looks very elegant. With a weight of 2 kg and a height of 24mm, it is remarkably thin. Nevertheless it looks spacious and not at all cramped for good productivity. The well built chassis is easily able to house a full-sized, backlit  keyboard with a number pad. Its touch screen supports 10-point inputs. The screen resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels is disappointing, but the screen size is perfect for Windows 8 touch use.

The Aspire V7 features the fourth generation Intel Core i7-4500U CPU with a clock rate of 1.8GHz. The lack of a discrete graphics continues the disappointing resolution. So, the device is suitable for casual gamers. Another disadvantage is, that it only features a single USB 3.0 port. But, the sound system is a delight, with the rare ability to produce a decent amount of bass. The location of the speakers on the underside of the laptop is a little unfortunate. Soft surface will muffle the audio. Overall, this machine is a well built and good looking portable or desktop replacement for less intensive tasks with a great battery life. For all that it sets out to be, it definitely beats the competition.

Ultimately this isn’t an awful product, just an awfully average one, released at a time when the competition is starting to get things right. When you consider that you can likely get a non-Ultrabook that weighs a smidge more and delivers much more power for less money the V7 really becomes a hard sell.

For $849, the Acer Aspire V7 provides users with a responsive multitouch screen, loud and crisp speakers, and a battery life that will last through a workday and beyond. However, the Toshiba Satellite S55t-A5277 provides a quality gaming experience for only $140 more, and the Sony VAIO T Series 15 offers a far superior 1920 x 1080 display and 250GB more hard-drive space with the same starting price.

Acer's Aspire V7 is a big unit with a thin profile and solid build quality. Despite a couple of quirks with its input devices, and a low screen resolution, the 15.6in Acer Aspire V7 is a very interesting laptop that caught us a little by surprise. It's solid, good looking, performs well, and its battery life is long.

Acer Aspire V7-582P-6673

The Acer Aspire V7-582P-6673 is a slender, Windows 8 touchscreen ultrabook. The aluminum chassis has a minimalist design and is sturdy. The 15.6 inch display sports a disappointing 1366 x 768 resolution, but the colors seem nice enough, and viewing angles are great. The screen could use a boost in brightness though, coming in well behind the most of the competition out there. The keyboard is nicely laid out and responsive, as are touchpad and touchscreen. Weighing in at 2.2kg, this ultrabook is amongst the lightest of its class, though it is a little bit wider.

Powered by a 1.6-GHz Intel Core i5-4200U along with 8GB of RAM, the Acer Aspire V7-582P-6673 is a little bit behind the competition. However, most light to moderate tasks will run well. With its Intel HD Graphics 4400 card, it is not a machine for gamers, and again most of the competition will beat it. Most moderately heavy games will bog it down. But it shines in battery life. This machine can easily last a full day of heavy use, which is much better than all its competitors. It's a pretty machine with a good battery life, but for its price tag it seems like the Acer Aspire V7-582P-6673 just isn't a good choice. The disappointing screen and the lack of power might not be worth it.

Stamina and Style? Acer’s latest touchscreen-equipped Ultrabook might seem a bit large for its sake, but its promise of great battery life and strong performance make a compelling argument nonetheless. Is it worthy of consideration?

Aside from the possible deal-breaker in the slippery keyboard, you should place the V7-582P-6673 on your shopping list if you need a well-built desktop replacement laptop that will last you the four to six years for junior and senior high school or college. 79% An unassuming ultrabook with gaming chops
Source: CNet English Archive.org version
On-the-go gaming is always tough for PC gamers. The super-thin Razer Blade is expensive, with some big missed opportunities, and recent small gaming laptops from Alienware and others are still too bulky for easy travel. The Acer Aspire V7 is an everyday ultrabook first, and does a decent job of that, but it also handles mainstream gaming chores, as long as you keep your expectations realistic.

The Acer Aspire V7 isn’t the ultimate Ultrabook, but it’s thin, it’s fast enough for all but the most demanding content-creation tasks, and it’ll play hard-core games (albeit at slightly lower resolution than full HD). I like it a lot.

The Acer Aspire V7 is all about power. In our performance tests it blows away most competitors by posting processor scores 20 percent higher than average and doubling the performance of Intel HD 4600 in 3D games. Only the Asus Zenbook UX51 and Razer Blade are quicker, but both start at $500 more, making this $1,300 system look like a steal.

80% Can portability and performance coexist in one Ultrabook?

Anyway you slice it the Acer Aspire V7 is an odd duck in the notebook world. It strikes an interesting compromise giving Ultrabook users a more capable machine while adding a smaller, lighter option for 14-inch laptop lovers. At the same time the Acer has an identity of its own offering users a lot without breaking the bank. WIth a stunning screen and great speakers, it a perfect media viewing device.

It has been a long time since we've awarded an Editors' Choice for midrange ultrabooks, because the space has been evolving over the past three years. Systems like the Lenovo IdeaPad U430 Touch have moved down in price with lower-resolution screens and spinning hard drives, while high-end ultrabooks, like the Editors' Choice Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus$1,259.96 at Amazon, have moved upmarket with QHD+ (3,200-by-1,800 resolution) screens, all-day battery life, speedy SSD-only configurations, and lofty price tags. The Acer Aspire V7-482PG-6629 excels in the middle, with a 1080p HD screen and discrete graphics balancing the price savings from its hybrid-drive configuration.

Acer: In 1976, the company was founded in Taiwan under the name Multitech and was renamed Acer or Acer Group in 1987. The product range includes, for example, laptops, tablets, smartphones, desktops, monitors, TVs and computer peripherals. Since 2007, the group has merged with Gateway Inc. and Packard Bell, which also market their own laptop product lines.

Acer computers are designed for a variety of purposes, including ultrabooks for mobile use, gaming laptops for gamers, affordable options for everyday tasks, and 2-in-1 convertible laptops for versatility. Acer's product portfolio also includes tablets that offer portable computing and multimedia capabilities.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 720M: Lower middle-class graphics card based on the 28 nm GF117 (Fermi).

NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M: Upper mid-range graphics card of the GeForce GT 700M series. Based on the Kepler architecture and manufactured by TSMC in a 28nm process.

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

Intel HD Graphics 4400:

ULV integrated GPU (GT2) with 20 EUs found on certain Haswell CPU models.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

4500U:

Haswell-based ULV dual-core processor clocked at 1.8 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.0 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4400 and a dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.

Intel Core i5:

4200U:

Haswell-based ULV dual-core processor clocked at 1.6 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 2.6 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4400 and a dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

14.00:

14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.

The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.

In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

72.44%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
