Acer Aspire S5 Ultrabook pictures and hands-on

With its second bite at the Ultrabook cherry, Acer looks to have hit the heights. This time, instead of a half measure in the shape of the Acer Aspire S3 with its hybrid SSD/HDD storage solution, the Acer Aspire S5 goes straight to the top of the Ultrabook tree by taking the title as the thinnest of the lot.

We wouldn't say the S5 has completely wowed us but it certainly looks like being a solid contender among the many new ultrabooks we expect to see arriving in the early part of 2012, just so long as you don't need a backlit keyboard or built in Ethernet.

High-end debut. With the 1500 Euros (~$1927) ultrabook Aspire S5, Acer wants to attract customers in the luxury segment. In order to achieve this, the manufacturer sets on fast hardware, fine materials, and a couple of interesting features. Is this enough to put pressure on the established competition?

Unfortunately, the Acer S5 isn't the savior that we've been waiting for. Even with a budget exceeding Intel's $1,000 target, the S5 is a victim of compromise like so many others. Intel's i7-3517U processor, 4GB of RAM, the ridiculously-fast SSDs in RAID0 and a variety of connectivity options all score extremely high in my book. I'm able to look past the lack of discrete graphics but the low-quality TN display, lack of a backlit keyboard and heavy use of plastic at this price point all keep the S5 from truly shining. That's not to say that this is a bad computer by any means; it just falls short of what manufacturers have promised ultrabooks can be. I'm still waiting for someone to deliver the total package.

We love the looks and the build quality. The Acer Aspire S5 not only looks and feels like a premium product, it's extremely thin and light too. Yet the Ultrabook doesn't feel flimsy and we'd trust it on the road. The MagicFlip is an interesting design element, but it's more for show and the the motorized door seems like one more thing to worry about breaking.

The Acer Aspire S5 leans heavily on its motorized port door, but it really doesn't need gimmicks to sell itself. This is the current leader in the arms race for the thinnest officially labeled ultrabook, and has the rare quality of being just plain fun to use. That said, I'd kill for a backlit keyboard. Even thinner and lighter than a 13-inch MacBook Air, the Acer Aspire S5 is a great example of an ambitious ultrabook, held back by a few flaws and its high price

This is the most impressed I've been with an Acer notebook in some time. Most of my usual whipping boys have been taken care of, and I'm left with an ultrabook that's for the most part very usable. We're pretty fond of the saying "there's no such thing as a bad product, only a bad price" around here, and that holds very true with the S5.

The Acer Aspire S5 combines light weight with blazing fast performance, but also falls short on some critical features. For $1,399, you should expect a sharper screen and longer battery life, which you can get from competitors such as the MacBook Air ($1,199 to start or $1,499 with 256GB SSD) or the ASUS ZenBook Prime UX31A ($1,049 to start, $1,499 for 256GB SSD).

Acer's Aspire S5 Ultrabook contains innovation and plenty of speed. The model we looked at was equipped with a Core i7 CPU and two solid state drives in a RAID 0 configuration. It's an ultraportable that's suitable for anyone who wants great overall performance in a small package but it isn't perfect. Its screen could be better, its keyboard isn't backlit and its battery life was a little too short in our tests.

With its $1400 price tag, the Acer Aspire S5 is certainly aiming to be a premium level of ultrabook design and it does succeed quite well in some areas such as its performance and thin and light profile. The problem is that there are a number of gimmicks and shortcuts that make it a less than outstanding choice for a high end ultrabook.

Acer, the creator of the world's first ultrabook, the Aspire S3, has jumped on Intel's new generation of processors to expand its catalogue with the Aspire S5. This 13.3" ultrabook is one of the fastest and most responsive of its kind. However, it gets only 4 hours of battery life, there are a few issues with the finishing and the inferior screen brings its overall score down to three stars.

Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A vs Acer Aspire S5 – premium ultrabooks compared
Source: Ultrabook Review English Archive.org version
All in all, both the Acer Zenbook Prime UX31A and the Acer Aspire S5 are premium 13.3 inch ultrabooks. In fact, they are some of the best you can get in this class, budget aside. The Acer does have a couple of tricks, like the thin and light body, classic looks, fast SSD and the unique MagicFlop port cover. Both overall the Asus Zenbook is the better pick in my eyes, as it not only looks and feels better, but it also bundles a better keyboard and display, plus lasts slightly longer on a charge. All those while going for basically the same price as the Acer right now.

The Acer Aspire S5 certainly offers strong performance and a beautiful design, but it's a mixed bag with strange design quirks and several features that fall flat. Frankly, the biggest issue with the Acer Aspire S5 isn't the MagicFlip panel, or any of its other design flaws—it's the price. At $1,400, this is one of the more expensive ultrabooks on the market, but aside from a marginally thinner profile and a Thunderbolt port it fails to deliver the features or experience you expect in that price range. Compared with the Editors' Choice Asus Zenbook Prime UX32VD-DB71, which offers better performance thanks in part to a discrete GPU, it's hard to give the Acer Aspire S5 anything more than a lukewarm recommendation.

The price premium here is ultimately what may be the bigger hill to climb. The $1,400 price tag is justified given the extra storage capacity, but it’s still tough to swallow when competitors’ ultrabooks can be had for under $1,000. Now if only that hatch would open and close as fast as the Aspire runs Excel.

The Acer Aspire S5 is one of the top ultra-portable laptops, packing genuine power. If you're looking for a primary laptop that can handle the rigours of everyday life, but be as light and svelte as humanly possible, you've found your ideal laptop. Be warned, however. The niggles and inconvenience of the MagicFlip hatch, the slightly dubious durability and average specifications - aside from the magnificent processor - mean that the buyer who wants it all might be advised to suffer a few more grams.

Acer Aspire S5 review: is this innovative Ultrabook worth $1,400?
Source: Engadget English Archive.org version
The Aspire S5 has some key ingredients that might have made it a great Ultrabook: a thin shape, an impressive port selection and blazing I/O performance. Unfortunately, though, Acer seems to have invested its energy in all the wrong places. Instead of a higher-resolution display or finer build quality, it focused on stuffing all the ports behind a door in the back -- a design choice that feels gimmicky at best, and tiresome at worst.

The Acer Aspire S5 is an odd duck. It is extremely thin and provides excellent performance in some areas. We’re unaware of another Ultrabook that can match the Acer Aspire S5’s hard-drive performance, and most Ultrabooks also will be dusted by its Core i7-3517U processor. But then we look at the price. Whoa, $1,399 is a lot of dough – and the S5’s design comes nowhere close to supporting it.

In short, this ultrabook is one of if not THE thinnest notebook you’re ever going to want to own, and with a look and feel like this, you’ll have a great time picking one up. The pricing is a bit concerning when compared to other ultrabooks on the market right now that can do essentially all of the same things this one can at just a bit larger a cost in the actual physical size department. But consider this: you get what you pay for, and if your aim is to grab a thinnest-in-class yet high-quality notebook with power enough to play top-quality games and work all day long on web and local-based type-heavy tasks on Windows, you’ve got the best there is right here.

Batman aside, the Acer Aspire S5 will appeal to two groups of people: those who want the slimmest ultrabook—at 0.6x12.8x8.9 inches, this thing out-flattens even the MacBook Air—and those who want the swiftest. For the former, or as an executive status symbol, the S5 has no real competition except for the Samsung Series 9. For the latter, it's the fastest ultrabook Computer Shopper has tested.

We applaud the addition of Thunderbolt, which expands connection possibilites with a growing range of high-speed peripherals. MagicFlip, the motorised port bay is also a very neat idea, if applied with an annoying mechanism that always sounds stressed. The rest of the laptop is near-standard ultrabook fare, down to the sub-standard display and copycat components specifications shared with almost every other model. Thunderbolt may bring the S5 closer in spec to the MacBook Air that inspired it, but an extra £100 buys a real MacBook Air with the same 256GB storage capacity, but a decent screen and far better build quality.

Acer has produced its best-looking laptop yet with the Aspire S5, and created one of the world’s thinnest 13in Ultrabooks while it’s at it. Premium touches like the (for now) rare inclusion of a Thunderbolt port also help to set it apart, especially since it and the rest of the S5’s connectivity are hidden in an innovative motorised door called MagicFlip.

The Acer Spire S5 is a pretty decent ultrabook, with a great chassis design and overall snappy performance. While the benefits of the MagicFlip panel are moot, there’s no denying that the 11mm profile of the Aspire S5 is impressively thin. Of course, what hurts the Aspire S5 is the simple fact that for its high price point, the competition offers much more. The slightly more expensive Samsung Series 9 ultrabook has much higher resolution screen and better battery life. Same goes for the entry level MacBook Air which has slightly better overall specs compared to the Aspire S5, but costs less.

Acer: In 1976, the company was founded in Taiwan under the name Multitech and was renamed Acer or Acer Group in 1987. The product range includes, for example, laptops, tablets, smartphones, desktops, monitors, TVs and computer peripherals. Since 2007, the group has merged with Gateway Inc. and Packard Bell, which also market their own laptop product lines.

Acer computers are designed for a variety of purposes, including ultrabooks for mobile use, gaming laptops for gamers, affordable options for everyday tasks, and 2-in-1 convertible laptops for versatility. Acer's product portfolio also includes tablets that offer portable computing and multimedia capabilities.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M: Middle class graphics card of the 600M series based on the 28nm GK107 chip (Kepler architecture).

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

Intel HD Graphics 4000: Processor graphics card in the high end Ivy Bridge models. Offers a different clock speed in the different CPU models (ULV to desktop quad core) and therefore a different performance.

Intel Core i5:

2467M: Power saving ULV processor clocked at 1.6-2.3 GHz due to Turbo boost. Offers an integrated HD 3000 clocked at slow 350 / 1150 MHz and a DDR3-1333 memory controller.

3317U: Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q2 2012. Offers a core clock of 1.7 - 2.6 GHz and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1050 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

3517U: Fast Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q2 2012. Offers a core clock of 1.9 - 3.0 GHz and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1150 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.

71.11%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation.
