Kepler's Debut. "Ultrabook XL" is one way of describing the Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M3 as the notebook doesn't exactly check in gracefully in its 15-inch case. However, with the new GeForce GT 640M graphics card, Acer offers a worthwhile treat that promises gaming on the go.

It's a laptop that should appeal to those of you who want a good, all-round laptop that's slim, yet well stocked. The Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M3 is a very good notebook overall, offering exceptional performance and battery life. It's also well built and stylish. However, we wish it had some ports on the sides and that there was a little more room for the left palm rest.

Nvidia has been calling the Acer Timeline U M3 the first true Ultrabook. And the big, green graphics giant has good reason to be backing this svelte-looking machine - at its heart beats the very latest in mobile graphics power, the GeForce GT 640M.

Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M3 review

With the Ultra M3, Acer has delivered some serious computing power in an incredibly thin package. In our opinion, it's simply too big to be evaluated as a true Ultrabook, though it is thinner and lighter than typical 15-inch laptops. Its high-end internals allow for some noteworthy performance, but its plastic construction and shoddy screen scream low-end, making it a bit of a paradox.

While it's already been proven that you can cram very good graphics and battery life into a thin 15-inch system, the Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M3 takes it to the next level. Nvidia's next-generation GeForce GT640M GPU can hang with the best of them, letting you play the latest games anywhere. The audio is also quite satisfying. We only wish the M3 had a display that could better show off all that the GPU is capable of doing and that the ports were more easily accessible.

80% Acer Aspire Timeline M3 Ultra review
Source: Reg Hardware English
If you want a laptop that is really slim and light then you’ll obviously want to opt for a 13in Ultrabook instead. But if you compare the M3 to most 15.6in laptops then it actually comes out looking pretty good. It’s one of the slimmest and lightest 15.6in models currently available, whilst still managing to cram in a DVD drive and decent connectivity options. A higher clock speed would be nice, but the M3 should still cope perfectly well with most routine computing tasks, and the £500 price tag isn’t at all bad for a ‘semi-ultra’ laptop of this size.

This particular 581T-32364G34Mnkk configuration of the Acer Aspire Timeline U M3 makes it one of the cheapest ‘Ultrabooks’ available, or from another perspective, one of the lightest and slimmest affordable 15in laptops on the market. If this appeals to you it’s well worth considering thanks to decent looks, good build, nice usability and strong battery life. Otherwise you can get similar features and less awkward connection placement for the money elsewhere.

Acer Timeline Ultra M3 & NVIDIA GT 640M Review
Source: Hardware Canucks English
The Timeline Ultra M3 gave Acer the perfect opportunity to show the world how Ultrabooks should perform but without the GT 640M, it would be an absolute failure. Instead of being the success we had hoped it would be, this notebook feels rushed and incomplete in nearly every way imaginable.

The Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M3 is one of the first 'Ultrabooks' that deviate from the 13-inch form factor, and the very first to reach us with a shiny new NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M GPU in tow. Acer TimelineU M3: The first ultrabook with Kepler discreet graphics
Source: Inside HW English
The only two drawbacks are the placement of virtually all connectors on the back and an underwhelming lower-resolution display, although the latter has resulted in excellent gaming performance even in the latest games, something unheard of on the ultrabook market up to now. Of course, this is chiefly the work of NVIDIA’s latest notebook graphics, together with the great selection of CPU, memory and hybrid storage system. The graphics chip in question has managed to increase performance by an average of 50% without impacting power consumption, which is a very rare feat. Acer TimelineU M3 is an agile notebook, good for a multitude of usage scenarios, and as long as its price tag sticks in line with its competition (which it seems it will), it’s bound to be the top seller in its class.

Impressive as the graphics performance of this laptop is, we urge readers to wait. We will see a slew of new Kepler powered laptops over the coming months and we’re confident that most will be better than this one. We’re not sure why Nvidia decided to lead by placing its flagship processor in such a poor laptop – it may be that everyone else is waiting to release Kepler in new Ivy Bridge designs – but whatever the reason, the conclusion is the same.

At £600 the M3 offers fairly persuasive value for money. It also makes it one of the cheaper Ultrabooks - funny, given it doesn't really deserve the name. It should fall into a new category altogether, aimed directly at those who want to game on the go. For this, the M3 is the best we have seen. If, however, you are about to consider it as a thin laptop purchase, don’t, there is a lot better out there. What it has told us is what we can expect from this generation of mobile GPUs. Thinner, lighter and less power hungry, they can now very clearly rival the desktop. Lets just wait until someone wraps it all up in a package that looks a bit nicer.

The Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M3 is the most impressive ultrabook we've reviewed to date. Despite a few design annoyances, this 15-inch ultrabook delivers an exceptional balance of portability performance and a premium feel. We have a hard time overlooking things like a power button that is easy to press by accident and a complete lack of ports on the sides. Combine those two issues with a nasty hot spot on the bottom of the chassis and the Ultra M3 has three troublesome flaws.

WHEN LOOKING FOR a tagline that will easily sell a boatload of Acer Timeline M3 notebooks, it doesn’t take much more than: “an ultrabook that will play Battlefield 3 on Ultra setting.” And it’s true, too. Still, if the M3 is the shape of all-rounders in future, there’s a lot to like. It’s far more portable than most other all-rounders and while the low-voltage CPU isn’t as powerful as an equivalent full-voltage chip, PCMark 7 showed that the M3’s overall performance was still impressive. The heat was worrying and the screen was disappointing, but the M3 successfully showed that you can get all-rounder performance without the weight.

80% Acer Aspire M3 Touch
Source: Techtree.com English
The Acer Aspire M3 Touch is a capable performer in both office applications as well as gaming. Its display quality is nothing to write home about, but it is nevertheless as responsive as you would expect of a Windows 8 capacitive multi-touch screen. The large 15.6"screen size and the weight make it ideal as a desktop replacement, rather than as an Ultrabook that can be carried around. One of the interesting things to note about this laptop is its switchable graphics that can switch between discrete NVIDIA and onboard Intel graphics according to application load, and thus help get a better battery backup. The Aspire M3 doesn't just good look, but also sports excellent build quality. The battery backup time is also noteworthy for a laptop with discrete graphics. Priced at Rs 63,000, this seems to be a good buy, but if you are not going to use the touchscreen, you can opt for the Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M3, instead for around Rs 50,000 with almost the same hardware, except that it has a Core i5 (which is faster) and more importantly, lacks the touchscreen

With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M: Middle class graphics card of the 600M series based on the 28nm GK107 chip (Kepler architecture).

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M:

Multiple models based on various chips of the Fermi generation. Specifically, the GT 630M exists in GF108/GF106/GF116 variants, but are all essentially renamed GeForce GT 540M or 555M GPUs. A 28nm GF117 variant exists as well with reduced power consumption.

Intel HD Graphics 4000: Processor graphics card in the high end Ivy Bridge models. Offers a different clock speed in the different CPU models (ULV to desktop quad core) and therefore a different performance.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

2637M: Power saving ULV processor clocked at 1.7-2.8 GHz due to Turbo Boost. Offers an integrated HD 3000 clocked at slow 350 / 1200 MHz and a DDR3-1333 memory controller.

Intel Core i3:

2367M: Power efficient ULV processor clocked at 1.4 GHz without Turbo boost. Offers an integrated HD 3000 clocked at slow 350 / 1000 MHz and a DDR3-1333 memory controller.

15.6: 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays. However nowadays, more and more 16:9 displays with 15.6 inch appear. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

2.03 kg:

These sub-notebooks weight less than the average of all notebooks, but represent a heavier class of weight among the sub-notebooks. 13 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.

2.3 kg:

80.96%: This rating should be considered to be average. This is because the proportion of notebooks which have a higher rating is approximately equal to the proportion which have a lower rating.
