At the end of the day, the Acer Aspire E5-471-59RT is a satisfactory desktop replacement for the general user who simply needs a Windows PC to use traditional programs like office apps, and browse the Internet, including full compatibility with plug-ins. It's a good choice if you only have $500 to $550 to spend on a laptop. That said, the Lenovo Flex 2 (15-inch) holds on to its Editors' Choice for budget desktop-replacement laptops, due to its innovative folding hinge, keyboard, and 1080p touch screen, though you will pay about $175 more for those features.

The $500 Acer Aspire E5-471-59RT does a lot of things right. It has strong processing power for the money, great battery life and a solid keyboard wrapped in a sleek raspberry coating. While I wish the display were better and that Acer had included an extra 4GB of RAM, the Aspire E5-471-59RT is a solid budget machine than can compete with more expensive 14-inch systems from ASUS and Dell.

Acer Aspire E5-471G-53XG

The Aspire E5-471G-53XG is a laptop clearly made for the average mid-range user. It measures about 1.25 by 13.75 inch (3.18 x 35 cm) and weighs about 4.4 pounds (2 kg), which is certainly light enough to carry around the house but might be slightly bulky for the ultimate "go-user". The 14-inch screen has a resolution of 1366x768 pixels, which is common for budget systems. Apart from that, its mediocre display lacks any touchscreen functionality, a function rather important for maximizing the Windows 8 experience.

Around the corners, you'll find a mix of old and modern I/O ports including a USB 3.0 port, 2 USB 2.0 ports, an SD card reader, an Ethernet port, and VGA and HDMI for video output. The Aspire E5-471G-53XG comes with the standard connectivity options, Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi. Under the hood are a mid-range Intel processor, the i5-4210U, 8 GB of RAM, a discrete Nvidia GeForce GT 820M graphics and a 500 GB hard drive. The lack of an SSD kills the hopes of any instant Windows start-up but for a mid-range laptop, this is fine.

Battery life is where the Acer Aspire E5-471G-53XG shines. Its suggested battery life is around 10 hours on standby. This laptop is a perfect laptop for a mid-range user looking to replace a desktop with something that is easier to carry around.

The Acer Aspire E5-471G-53XG is a good desktop-replacement laptop, and is certainly a passable choice if you need to replace an older system and still keep compatibility with older programs and peripherals. Its longer battery life is its one advantage over the Lenovo Flex 2 (15-inch). However, the Flex 2 holds on to its Editors' Choice award, due to its innovative hinge and larger 1080p full HD touch screen for a list price of just $80 more.

Hands on: Acer Aspire E14 review
Source: Techradar English Archive.org version
The Acer Aspire E14 is a compelling package for $379 (about £250, AU$485), but those in the US won't be able to get their hands on it until July. That's a long lead time, and the competition in the affordable laptop space is only mounting with amazing Chromebooks - including the Chromebook 15, which Acer itself made.

Acer: In 1976, the company was founded in Taiwan under the name Multitech and was renamed Acer or Acer Group in 1987. The product range includes, for example, laptops, tablets, smartphones, desktops, monitors, TVs and computer peripherals. Since 2007, the group has merged with Gateway Inc. and Packard Bell, which also market their own laptop product lines.

Acer computers are designed for a variety of purposes, including ultrabooks for mobile use, gaming laptops for gamers, affordable options for everyday tasks, and 2-in-1 convertible laptops for versatility. Acer's product portfolio also includes tablets that offer portable computing and multimedia capabilities.

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

Intel HD Graphics 4400:

ULV integrated GPU (GT2) with 20 EUs found on certain Haswell CPU models.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

NVIDIA GeForce 820M:

Entry level 28nm Fermi GPU from the GeForce 800M series based on the GT 620M and 710M.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

Intel HD Graphics (Bay Trail):

Integrated GPU for tablet and notebook Bay Trail SoCs. Based on the Ivy Bridge GPU with four Execution Units and support for DirectX 11.

Intel Pentium:

N3540: Soc with an integrated quad core Atom processor clocked at 2.16 - 2.66 GHz and an Intel HD Graphics GPU.

14.00:

14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.

The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.

In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

70%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
