When we first reviewed the Acer Aspire 8943g back in July of 2010, we concluded that this huge-screen desktop replacement had the power and components to satisfy multimedia enthusiasts and gamers alike. Entertainment laptop meets gaming rig in this Aspire. You get very good performance on all fronts, especially if you need a combined playtime/workday PC.

Acer’s Aspire 8943G notebook is about as far from the company’s budget netbooks as you could get in a computer and yet still have a battery. A sizeable desktop replacement, with slick, minimalist design and high quality materials, the Aspire 8943G doesn’t stint on specifications, either, with an Intel Core i7 CPU and lashings of RAM. Can an Acer PC really compete, not just on performance but aesthetics too, with Apple’s well-esteemed MacBook Pro line? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850:
The HD 5850 is a slower clocked HD 5870 and is reliant on fast GDDR5 memory to perform in the high-end segment. It is based on the Desktop HD 5770 chip but with a lower clock speed.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
The Core i7-740QM is a high-end quad-core CPU for laptops (in 2010) with a relative small base clock rate and a high Turbo Boost max frequency of 2.93 GHz (for one core). Therefore, it combines the advantages of a slow clocked quad core CPU with a fast single core one. Compared to the faster Core i7 mobile CPUs, the 740QM only features 6MB L3 Cache.
