While the new N830 Phenom II X3 mobile processor doesn't use more power than previous dual-core AMD chips, its performance isn't stellar unless you really need more than two cores. Lacking any other distinguishing features, this version of the Acer Aspire 5551 thus feels like a cheaper laptop than it actually is and, until its price comes down, there are many more attractive options readily available - even from Acer itself.

Without airs and graces. 15.6" mainstream notebooks at attractive prices are a dime a dozen. Apart from the attractive optics, Acer offers mainly standard fare with the Aspire 5551G-N834G64Mn. The only highlight is the brand new triplecore CPU from AMD, the Prenom II X3 N830.

So throw out all the standard warnings regarding Acer laptops: they don't have the greatest build quality, consisting almost entirely of a plastic chassis; the keyboard is at best tolerable and at worst an object of pure hate; quality control and customer opinions on Acer usually fall on the "you get what you pay for" side of the fence. All of that is a given, and the 5551G-4591 doesn't do much to change those assumptions.

The Acer Aspire 5551G-4591 is difficult to recommend as a general purpose laptop. The laptop’s user interface is not impressive, the display is too glossy, and the speakers are sub-par. Portability is also a lost cause due to the laptop’s weight, large size and minimal battery life. The AS5551G-4591 isn’t the best laptop for productivity, it isn’t the best laptop for travel, and it isn’t the best laptop for listening to music or watching movies. It is, however, a good value when it comes to gaming. The Acer Aspire 5551G-4591, and its various cousins, has serious gaming chops. This laptop can trade punches with the $1,199 entry level Alienware M15x, which has a faster Core i3 processor but inferior Nvidia GT 240M graphics solution.

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470: Entry level DirectX 11 chip with GDDR5 support but only 80 shader cores. Supports Eyefinity (up to 4 monitors) and 8-ch HD audio over HDMI. Performance on par with the old GeForce 8600M GT.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650: Middle class DirectX 11 capable graphics card with a power consumption of about 15-20 Watt. Supports Eyevision (up to 6 monitors)

AMD Turion II:
P520: Entry level Dual-Core CPU with a TDP of 25 Watt. Offers a similar performance as a 2.1 - 2.3 GHz Core 2 Duo with 2 MB Level 2 Cache.
AMD Phenom II X3:
N830: Mobile 3-core laptop processor based on the desktop Athlon II X3.
AMD Phenom II X4:
N930: Mobile Quad-Core CPU with 2 GHz clock speed. Because of the missing Level 3 Cache and no Turbo, the N930 is not well suited for games.
15.6: 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays. However nowadays, more and more 16:9 displays with 15.6 inch appear. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.
