Reviews for the AVADirect Clevo W230ST

70% AVADirect Clevo W230ST

AVADirect’s W230ST does have a lot going for it. In addition to its awesome display, the notebook offers impressive GPU performance and is very portable. At $1,557 it’s priced fairly, though if you intend to use it just for gaming, we would suggest saving 80 bucks by going for 8GB of RAM instead of the 16GB configured here, as that’s still plenty for gaming.

AVADirect’s Clevo W230ST is a laptop of extremes. From a performance standpoint it’s excellent, out-running the more expensive Razer Blade and blowing away every other 13-inch ultraportable we’ve tested. This praise carries over to the display, which somehow manages to offer the usability of semi-gloss while simultaneously delivering high contrast.

The AVADirect Clevo W230ST provides great performance at an affordable price. The more expensive Alienware 14 admittedly offers better build quality and a larger display, but the Clevo W230ST is $500 cheaper (with comparable configurations) and is even easier to transport weighing 2 pounds less.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M SLI: Two GeForce GTX 765M graphics cards in SLI combination.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

4800MQ: Haswell-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.7 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.7 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

13.30":

There are hardly any tablets in this display size range anymore. For subnotebooks, on the other hand, it is the standard format.

The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small and therefore easily portable. The smaller display also has the advantage of requiring less power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is more strenuous on the eyes. High resolutions are more likely to be found in standard laptops.

76.67%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
