Company targets sub $1,000 pricing for ultrathin notebook

ASUS stole the spotlight back at Computex with their ultrathin UX21 notebook, and the sleek “ultrabook” is making news once again. With the 11.6” MacBook Air starting at $999 and the Samsung Series 9 selling for $1,159, ASUS is looking to beat their biggest competitors in the ultraportable market by going even lower on the price scale.

According to a report by the Chinatimes, supplier sources have informed them that the UX21 should begin selling for a price that is 8-9% lower than similar Apple products. If true, then we could see the laptop sometime in September priced at around the $900 mark.

The latest ultrathin notebook to hit the market already beats Apple’s MacBook Air on specs alone, and the lower price tag could be quite the coup for ASUS. The aluminum UX21 can fit up to a Core i7 processor inside and comes with an SSD and USB 3.0, while weighing only 2.4 pounds and lasting 7 hours per charge. Of course not all the aforementioned specs will come in the sub-$1000 version, but it should still be a solid machine regardless of the price tag.
