4G PlayBook coming "later this year"
We’ve been hearing about a 4G PlayBook for quite a while now, with some leaked pictures even popping up, and there’s finally confirmation straight from the top of Research in Motion (RIM).
At a Q&A session today at BlackBerry World 2012 in Orlando, RIM CEO Thorston Heins informed members of the press that an LTE-capable PlayBook is currently in the pipeline. The 4G tablet should be released “later this year”, which matches what we’d heard about a June launch date.
The announcement comes on the heels of RIM unveiling their latest BlackBerry 10 OS, which features an upgraded touchscreen interface and should be making its way to the PlayBook tablet as well as all new BlackBerry phones. For the time being, there is no info about what carriers will support the device, but with Sprint already having cancelled their launch, we don’t expect the device to be available outside of AT&T or Verizon.
