11.6” Samsung Series 9 now up for pre-order for $1,199

11.6” ultra-thin Samsung laptop can now be pre-ordered from certain online retailers

Samsung quietly debuted their 13.3” Series 9 laptop last week, and the 11.6” version of the Series 9 appears to be following suit. Without much noise, the ultra-thin laptop now has its own official launch page and is available from certain retailers for a pre-order price of $1,199.

The ultra-thin Series 9 is Samsung’s attempt to compete with Apple’s 11.6” MacBook Air and the latest model appears to be the Air’s direct challenger.  The Series 9 laptops are outfitted with a light-weight Duralumin enclosure and are extremely thin. Samsung first announced the 13.3” model for $1,649 and is following things up with the 11.6” version.

As a result of the price drop and smaller screen, the laptop will only have 2GB of RAM and a Core i3 380UM processor unlike the 4GB of RAM and the Core i5 2537M found in the 13.3” model. Unfortunately, the differences don’t end there as the 11.6” model will only be privy to a 64GB SSD instead of the 128GB SSD found in its elder brother; quite a dismay for those looking for a good amount of storage. Otherwise, the 2 versions of the notebook seem to be on par, as they come with Integrated Intel HD 3000 Graphics, 3 USB ports, HDMI, a 1.3MP webcam and a 6-cell battery.

The 11.6” Samsung Series 9 is currently up for pre-order from various retailers including JR.com, PC Mall, MacMall, BuyDig.com and others. While most retailers are offering the laptop for $1,199, Amazon and DataVision seem to have a $50 discount on the laptop for the time being. At the moment the laptop has an April 1st shipping date on certain sites, but that hasn’t been confirmed by Samsung and could be subject to change.
